The final Devil Want My Soul party of 2015 is on Saturday at Palisades (fb/tix). This is a weird feeling for me, since I’ve spent most of this year excited about the next DWMS. The series has been especially crucial for grime heads in NYC, as other parties that once championed the genre have gone on hiatus or ended entirely.
Meanwhile, DWMS has brought out SO MANY of our favorite grime producers: Dark0, Champion, Mr. Mitch, Slackk, Logos. You could almost call it Boxed NYC. But the bookings are more ambitious than just replicating one of the world’s best grime nights; every lineup also champions club music that is truly progressive (MikeQ, Lotic, Joey LaBeija and many more).
This Saturday, we will be blessed with:

10 days to go until Outlook Festival 2015 properly kicks off, and we’re stupid excited. It’s the Mecca of soundsystem culture, and it’s been almost 3 years since we last made the pilgrimage. But we’ve been plotting our return the whole time. Since we can’t start packing quite yet, here’s what we’re really looking forward to the most.
They’re the heart and soul of Outlook, and what really distinguishes it from other music festivals. Every stage has a world class rig that would blow away nearly anything you’ve heard in NYC (except Tsunami Bass, they could hang). Some of the smaller systems there (not pictured above) are roughly equivalent to the main room at Output. No matter where you go there, you’ll be getting that fully submerged, body/mind/soul bass experience.
Duh. Definitely the best way to see an artist I love. You’re in a super intimate venue with the Adriatic sun and sea as backdrop. Once you leave dock, there’s no turning back (and definitely no swimming ashore!) so the whole crowd is 100% committed. Oh and the boat soundsystems? They don’t skimp. Here’s the full arsenal this year (to be split between 3 boats):
Catch us on the 20/20 Boat Thursday (Ivy Lab, Fracture, Jon Phonics), Archetype Boat on Friday with Amy Becker, NYC’s own Doctor Jeep (!!!), The Heatwave and Benton, and of course the Deep Medi Boat on Saturday.
There’s a lot to be said for the whole castle setting of Outlook, but that’s another post. This is probably my favorite venue in the world. First, it is in fact a moat; a massive trench dug 30+ feet into the earth, reinforced with sloping stone walls. Here’s a clear picture of it in the daytime. But fill it with ravers, a lethal soundsystem and lights, and it becomes an apocalyptic wind tunnel of bass. It’s like something out of a sci fi fever dream.
The Moat is hosting some of the more hardcore-leaning sounds of the festival – Renegade Hardware, Tectonic, Swamp81 and Critical Sound. Personally, we’ll be in there for the Tectonic takeover most of Saturday night.
One of the biggest draws for us as American citizens – finally getting to see all the amazing artists we’ve been listening to but somehow never get to New York! Even better, it’s with a crowd that knows and loves the music.
Fracture
Chimpo!
Skeptical
dBridge
Egoless
The Bug
Full DMZ voltron (Mala, Coki, Pokes and Loe)
Finally, the thing that’s the most wonderful, but also the hardest to describe about Outlook is getting immersed in sound system culture. Out there, you can traverse the entire hardcore continuum in one night; going from roots dub to dubstep to 2 step to grime to jungle to halftime to hip hop. Hearing sleng teng 100 different ways and the amen break 1000. Finally seeing artists that you’ve only ever heard sampled – like the last time we were there, hearing Max Romeo actually Chasing the Devil to outer space.
If you’re passionate about this music, then on some level you recognize that it’s part of a something larger – a fabric of history, culture and struggle that is still being created. That can be a tricky thing to articulate, but at Outlook you feel it. And that is truly a beautiful thing.
YOU GUYS It’s almost time for Outlook Festival and I’m starting to freak out a little bit. If you don’t know already, Outlook is the world’s greatest celebration of sound system music and culture, and it’s set in an abandoned fort on the stunning Adriatic coast in Croatia. It’s been 2 years since we were last there and we can not WAIT to get back. If reconstrvct is our local church, then Outlook is Mecca. And the Vatican. And Jerusalem. It’s a pilgrimage to the promised land.
I could go on, but this highlights video from last year does a much better job of transmitting all the vibes in 6 minutes than I could in a lifetime (especially if you watch it in HD 😎).
In the coming weeks we’ll be posting what we are most looking forward to, as well as some handy info for Americans who are trying to reach this summer. If that’s you, then it’s not too late! Tickets have not yet sold out (but they will) and flights are still pretty reasonable (but won’t be for much longer). Hit me up if you have any logistical questions.
PS go see him melt minds tonight at Deep Space – adv tix are just $10 all day or $20 at the door. Just imagine these tunes on Cielo’s Funktion-1s and tell me that’s not worth $10.
Go check out our feature for more info on tonight’s festivities (ticket contest is over btw). Nuff chat, on with the tunes »

Been waiting for these to get uploaded!
I first discovered Berlin’s Through My Speakers crew via the yung goddess Sarah Farina. I was pretty dang pleased when they got their own Boiler Room showcase last month (I’m guessing their excellent summer compilation NURNED.01 had something to do with it).
Only then did I realize that one of the members of TMS, Soulmind, was the same Soulmind who made one of the most beautiful, moving mixes of bass music I’ve ever heard (Over Distant Mountains: A Year In Bass Music). I posted rather effusively about it back when it dropped but hadn’t heard much from dude since then. I guess he was busy linking up with my future favorite DJs.
It’s completely unsurprising then that Soulmind’s BR set was fantastic. Impeccable mixing and selection, climaxing with the teklife classic All I do is (smoke trees) into a completely facemelting juke edit of DJ Shadow’s masterpiece Midnight in a Perfect World. Extra special s/o to whoever was doing the video mix right then; the shot of the setting sun over Berlin’s skyline was a really nice touch.
While all the sets were great, I was also particularly moved by Le Feu’s set. She goes so goddamned hard, clearly giving no fucks that the sun is way out:
And also Sarah Farina’s second, and hopefully not last set on BRTV. Switching it up from her last set which was mostly 160, here she has a ton of fun mashing things up in the 130 range:
Finally just wanted to give one more a s/o to another TMS member, She’s Drunk. His tune Pull Up is a dancefloor weapon in the vein of Pearson Sound’s Blanked or Tessela’s immortal Hackney Parrot. It’s also a free DL from mixmag so go grab dat.
For more goodness from Berlin’s Through My Speakers crew make sure to follow them on Soundcloud!

Thriftworks (SF), Sinjin Hawke, special guest, P. Morris, Subset, M!NT at SRB Brooklyn [10PM/15-20$]
We’re giving away 2 tickets to this show! Enter HERE before 6PM!
Thriftworks is one of the most unique voices in US bass music. In trying to describe his music, I’ve made up the following genres: bog-tech, skeksi club, avant druid, dagobah wave, insectno, dreamtime bass. Just listen to this live set and you’ll get what I’m trying to say. This is intensely organic music, made by someone who clearly spends a lot of time in nature.
While Thriftworks came up as a producer in the Bay Area glitch-hop scene, his music bears only the vaguest resemblance to his peers – Eskmo is the closest, but there’s still a vast gulf between them. His beats are definitely wonky, glitchy and backed up by some very rubbery bass. But there’s an definitively mystical quality to his work. And not in that obvious, fractal-loving, post-psytrance way that so many glitch-hop artists have adopted after enough time on hallucinogens. Imagine if Yoda had an MPC and a field recorder, and you’re getting close. Never one to fuck with a label, Thrifworks has self-released 6 full albums of amazing music since 2010, and you can hear it all at his bandcamp.
Co-headlining is Sinjin Hawke, who is about as different from Thriftworks as two white male producers can get. If Thriftworks is the mystic in the woods, worshipping plant gods and decomposition, Sinjin is the mystic of the city, exalting the entire pantheon of club styles and everything neon and steel and artificial. His latest mix for i-D mag makes that clear. From his collaborations with MikeQ that pretty much out-HudMo HudMo, to his 3d mapped visuals with Zora Jones, to his penchant for footwork and jersey club, this is the entire urban experience put in a space-blender and whipped to a fine froth.
Supporting you’ve got Subset, one of NYC’s hardest working bass music DJs. His BASSment Saturdays party skews towards Brostep in terms of headliners, but dude plays an phenomenal variety of subgenres in his sets, and with an extremely keen ear for moving the crowd (srsly guys, click that link). Also supporting is P.Morris, (formerly MORRI$), the Philly Night SLugs and Fade to Mind affiliate who recently rebooted his identity with the his first full length album, Debut. It’s an intensely hazy, emotional, and refreshingly non-aggro take on the 2013’s RnBass sounds. Hear the whole thing in a continuous mix here.

Thrilled to have just added a new date to the calendar for Rone, the French electronica maester. He’ll be appearing at Glasslands Thursday, April 3rd. Rone’s music resembles Jon Hopkins – textured, spacey electronica that straddles house and techno – but the mood is closer to the bouncey, neon optimism of Lone’s recent singles.
Hopefully he’ll be playing a live set, like he did in this amazing 40 minutes he turned out for a the recent Nuits Sonores takeover of the Boiler Room. Tracklist courtesy of 1001 Tracklists, which is a ridiculous rabbit hole for any DJ.

Bankstaz Paradise is some of the freshest shit I’ve heard in a minute. Spanish producer Strand delivers 6 tracks full of Afrobeat horns and skronky beats reminiscent of Fulgeance. Oh, and an Om Unit remix. How can you not hit play? According to the description,
he had two ideas in mind: paying homage to G-funk and Gangsta Rap (drawing a parallel between the gangstaz and bankstaz of the current Spanish economic crisis) and working with a soul-afrobeat horn section which was conveniently named The Financial Horns.
Love G-funk and I love the way he’s updated it and tied it in with current events. You can preorder the wax over at Bandcamp, this is out Feb 17 on Lovemonk.
The Womplist is a weekly email we do, listing our favorite NYC bass music events. The listings and writeups are republished here for the general public, but only subscribers get in on exclusive ticket giveaways, reduced lists, plus an extended bass music calendar in their inbox every Friday.

MIXPAK: Jubilee (Release Party), Star Eyes, Burt Fox, Dubbel Dutch, Dre Skull, The Large at The Call Box [10PM/FREE]
Release Party for Jubilee’s single Pull Ova/1-95 single, out this week on Mixpak. It’s a slammin pair of Miami Bass tracks, already receiving play at Fabric, Boiler Room and many more fine outlets. Longtime collaborators Star Eyes (of Trouble&Bass) and Burt Fox guest. Star Eyes will no doubt bring some heavy bass (as Troublemakers are wont to do) and Burt Fox has promised a “super miami set” in tribute to Jubilee’s musical heritage. The rest of the Mixpak crew will be slinging their meanest riddims as well. The Call Box is kinda out there (around the corner from Steel Drums) but with Mixpak’s devoted following, no cover and such a well-liked guest of honor, this one is gonna pack out.
RINSED: Bareskin (Hypercolour – UK), Jamie Antonelli, Dan Wender, Blacky II at secret location tba [11PM-6AM/$10-25]
Rinsed is taking a gamble with this one, bringing out a pair of basically unknown producers to headline. But they’ve become such an institution over the last two years that I’m fairly certain that won’t hurt their turnout. Bareskin (cue Mary Anne Hobbs voice) is just 19 years old but has already played all over the UK and Europe. His tunes are the kind of magical UK club material that can make 3-4am last forever (unnecessary in this instance as Rinsed goes till 6). Syrupy garage house, chopped Rnb vocals, and some warehousey 303s – it’s kinda like Boddika by way of Jacques Greene.
Year of the Future: Honey Jaws, Dis Fig, KeekeeKud at Pianos [1-4AM/FREE]
A newer party devoted to exactly our kind of bass music – the flyer promises garage, footwork, grime, house, dubstep and more – check the promo mix. It’s a weird slot, 1-4am at Pianos, but that also makes for a nice focused party. Resident DJ Dis Fig aka Felichen is definitely a badgyal on the decks – I’ve been lurking her soundcloud quite a bit and every single one of her mixes is on point in terms of both mixing and selection. She seems equally at home with footwork, house/techno and uk bass and hip hop. This is also the DJ debut of Honey Jaws (on right at 1am), who you may recognize from the front fucking row of every good bass show we rep.
Lets Play House: Policy, Paul Raffaele, Drew Heffron at Bossa Nova Civic Club [10PM/FREE]

Mr Saturday Night at Glasslands [11:30PM/$20]
The friendliest house & techno party ever is trying on Glasslands for size while their normal venue is on hiatus. They’ll be bringing in their own soundsystem and transforming the space to make things suitably special. This one is also sold out, but there will be some tickets at the door. Mr. Saturday has a very devoted following and there’s not a ton going on in terms of house/techno this night, so if you do want to get a ticket you had better outside at 11:15.
Break Science, Paul Basic at Bowery Ballroom [9PM/$15]
Brooklyn-based duo Break Science make some excellent, semi-ragey glitch hop and dubstep. It’s obviously aimed at the Bisco set (especially given their latest release being on Pretty Lights Music) but this also satisfies my craving for Glitch Mob-style west coast turrbocrunk. They’ve been touring their live set heavily for years, so you can expect a pretty tight show.
Thunder Gumbo’s FREEZINGMAN: Joro Boro, Bekim, Tinseltown, Pony, 2Melo, Dynasty Electric, many more at Paper Box [9PM/$10-15]

Levon Vincent, DJ QU, Dakini9, Terrence Parker, DJ Spider at Output [10PM/$20]
It’s not up for debate – Terrence Parker is one of the best DJs in the world. His remarkably active, editorial approach to mixing will make you wonder why all other DJs are so damn lazy. Joining him you’ve got Spider and Dakini9 from Plan B, one of Jersey’s best techno labels, as well as big name NY house guys Levon Vincent and DJ Qu.

NIGHT PEOPLE: Riton (Ed Banger), Blu Jemz, Lloydski at Le Bain [10PM/FREE]
Riton is a French electro producer with tremendous versatility. His Can’t Stop The Clock mix shows off his original production, bootlegging a bunch of his favorite tracks (I LOVE his Jeremih remix, which has zero trap despite being entitled “trap house”) . But his most recent mix really took me by surprise, because it’s packed end-to-end with UK Bass; dark warehouse breaks from faves like Special Request, Tessela, Randomer and Etch. I’m guessing he’ll probably play less underground to the Le Bain crowd, but anything could happen.

I got familiar with Lakim’s beats via his appearance this past friday alongside Doctor Jeep, DJ Hoodboi and Arnold at Planet Cognac’s show. Following him on soundcloud was a no-brainer, and my good taste was immediately rewarded when he posted this super-funky, stripped down house remix. That organ riff has been stuck in my head for 2 days so I figure I better post it. Even his dj drop is great. You can also grab a free download of this over at bandcamp. Looking forward to hearing a lot more from this guy, and hopefully he’ll be back in NYC soon.
