Womplist 45: Distal, Broke City, Juan Atkins, Keith Edward, Zombie Nation, L-Vis 1990, Detroit Swindle

FRIDAY, MAY 17

Distal, Owen Howells, Dave Q, Nooka Jones at Cameo Gallery [12AM/$7]
Distal is a fantastically talented producer out of Atlanta. Constantly pushing genre boundaries with his own work, and with the output of his label, Embassy, he’s come to embody “bass music” for me. Owen Howells is also producer and label owner from the UK, specializing in house and techno. Check his feature mix for percussion lab, who are also providing Nooka Jones as support. The addition of Dave Q, founder of Dub War and relentless advocate of futuristic bass music, makes this show an incredible deal for less than $10.

GET NAKED: Beto Cravioto plus Andy Pry, Keith Edward at 594 Union [10PM/FREE]
Beto Cravioto is a resident of the Kaviar Disco Club parties. He’s been getting a lot of  bookings lately thanks to his well-received release on Plant Music, and solid abilities selecting disco and deep house. Keith Edward and Andy Pry are both fucking awesome DJs. Keith is also a beatmaker (you might have heard his recent work on Stones Throw) and vinyl purist, with incredibly deep crates of disco, house, funk and soul records. His mixing is as tight as it gets. Andy Pry is one of three residents of the wildly successful Tiki Disco party. Their mix of everything from tech house to nu disco to classic hip hop has become synonymous with summertime in Brooklyn. With any luck, this party might too.

BROKE CITY: Body Language (dj set), BFG, Michael Jukeson, plus Sleepyhead, Figgy, Dunes at Bizarre Bushwick [9:30PM/FREE]
Body Language blew up from the Brooklyn DIY scene with many tentacles of awesomeness; their better-than-the-original indie pop remixes have gained them a wide net of supporters, while their output as a band making indie-ish feelgood slow disco has also been incredibly solid. They’ll be DJing house, techno and disco and also debuting a live side featuring members of the band. Astro Nautico resident Michael Jukeson also guest DJs, reciprocating when the Broke City residents took over Astro in April. And as always, the Broke City residents Sleepyhead, Figgy and Dunes are all stupid talented producers in their own right, making this party an absurd deal at free.ninetynine.

SATURDAY, MAY 18

Juan Atkins, Contakt at Cameo Gallery [12AM/$17-20]
Techno is one of the few genres whose origin can be acurately traced to a specific time, place and group of 3 friends. Juan Atkins is part of that Holy Trinity, and that’s as far as this metaphor is gonna go. If you crave raw, unadulterated Detroit techno, then there’s nothin better. Opening up is Turrbotax founder Contakt, who also grew up in Detroit, playing techno.

MIDNIGHT ZERO: ZOMBIE NATION, L-VIS 1990, Dubbel Dutch, Physical Therapy at Steel Drums [11PM/$10]
Steel Drums, the north Brookyln warehouse venue, has apparently gotten a makeover, and tonight are hosting a massive lineup. Just today they announced the surprise headliner ZOMBIE NATION, of Kernkraft 400 fame. Since his breakout hit in 99, he’s stayed busy, and true to his dark, saturated sound. Hopefully he’s playing one of his famed MPC live sets. Founding Night Slug L-Vis 1990 would have been headliner enough. Joining him is Mixpak boss Dubbel Dutch, who always brings the house down with manic, crunked-out tropical bass, and local techno DJ Physical Therapy.

GourmetBeats Radio show with Joe Nice

REQUIRED Listening. Nobody does it like JoeBama. Nobody. He sets up a facebook event for his radio show; not so he can spam thousands of people, but because it’s an EVENT when Joe Nice spins – even if it’s just online. Check the 344 RSVPs and countless giddy wall posts. The enthusiasm that this man brings to his craft is truly inspiring. And the selections? Legendary. It ain’t hype if it’s justified. Check the tracklist below if you still need convincing.

10,000 Watts of Culture: Interview with Dub-Stuy’s Q, soundsystem creator

Exciting things are happening in Brooklyn. While armchair critics cry the death of dubstep and the coming of the EDM overlords, those with their ears to the ground know better; the local scene has never been more vibrant. There are more bass music parties than ever reaching the tenure of second and third years, gaining

Dub War: footcrab edition

footcrabfootcrabfootcrabfootcrabfootcrabfootcrabfootcrab

Dub War at Love without a doubt the place to be for discriminating bassheads in NYC tonight. The legendary monthly, headlined by Headhunter (who, trusted sources tell me, played a facemelting set at Halcyon last night) has a special crustacial/podiatric bent tonight. Some of you might be adjusting your monocle and pondering aloud over a snifter of fine porto, “What is this Addison Groove chicanery!? Headhunter’s Dub War podcast #9 was a magnum opus of sub bass, atmospherics and dubby riddims! Surely one musical alias is more than sufficient!” But then, that was before footcrab.
Addison Groove is when Headhunter makes juke, and I’m ain’t mad about that. However, for something so hyped, I thought this track was pretty unremarkable the first time I heard it. I love the 808-porn of chicago juke as much as anyone, and there’s a nice spacey thing going on between the propulsive bass kicks and the dubsteppy synths. But the vocal sample was just….mehhhh. Not doing much for me. Dumbshit, like the B side.
And yet it grows on you. Sticks in your brain at really inopportune moments. It’s as infectious and tenacious as the imaginary std that you might have first thought ‘footcrab’ referred to. And most importantly, when Headhunter/Addison Groove drops it tonight, the place is going to go OFF. So get there before midnight for $10 admission, and get ready to footcrab like a motherfucker.

ESSENTIAL PARTYING: Dub War ft. EPROM + ESKMO (Friday 2/19)

sickass art that came with the EPROM ’09 mix

THIS FRIDAY: Eprom and Eskmo are supporting Shackleton at DUB WAR, the original NYC bass party. Eskmo we’ve talked about already. It’s EPROM you need to know about. His “Enter The Psyphy” mix, even before Jantsens polyponymous “whomptronica”, was a turning point in my life, musically speaking. It’s what put me on to the whole west coast glitch-hop sound in early ’07.
ESKMO’s new productions trade bwomp for remorselessly bitcrushed granularized bassline crunk – his snares sound like a bowl of capn crunch, dr. pepper and pop rocks gettin nommed by a decepticon. It’s dark and nasty and raw stuff, but also kinda has this saturday morning cartoon adventure vibe.
And now Dub War is back at Love, after a 3 month hiatus and something I heard about a renovation; if you’ve never been, Love is a magical and literally underground club with a midsized wood dancefloor and a soundsystem that will rip your fucking face off. The walls made entirely of subs. I always make a point when I’m there to crouch in a corner and take a “bass bath” – it’s basically vibrating every molecule in your body on intensely pleasurable frequencies. I heard the fraggle rock area is for sale, too, which I guess means that they took out that deliciously slutty 2 level cave-couch leather and fur playpen room where you could watch projections on a waterfall between you and the bar.
