WOMPLIST 55: Reconstrvct, Grenier & XI, Ben UFO, Goth Trad, Boxcutter, Taste Tester & Hydrabadd, Mess Kid

FRIDAY, JULY 26

DESCENT: Grenier, XI, Congi (US debut), Prism, Blysk at House of Yes [10PM/$20-25]
Biggest lineup yet from the Descent crew. This is the US debut of Congi, a dubstep producer from the UK, whose jazzy inflections and laid back vibes will delight anyone who enjoys Author or Phaeleh. Also headlining are future bass pioneer XI and Grenier / DJG – who also happen to be old friends, and will be doing a very special b2b. I’ve been in love with XI beats ever since I heard his scene-stealing remix of Sepalcure. And Grenier? Oh gosh. His set at reconstrvct earlier this year was one of the best I’ve ever seen; a brilliant, flawless, relentlessly energized all vinyl set of all styles of bass music. His free album, VOIDS III, is easily one of the best LPs of this year. Warming it up will be Descent founder and resident Blysk, and Boston’s dubstep virtuoso, Prism. Hit up our feature page on this event for set times and a 20% discount code on advance tickets!

Percussion Lab x Rudimentary Records: Boxcutter (Planet Mu ✈ Ireland), Enoe, Archie Pelago, Seafloor, Braille at Cameo Gallery [12AM/$7-10]
God bless Percussion Lab. In addition to hosting one of the best mix repositories on the internet, they’re always booking the most interesting producers. This time around it’s Planet Mu’s Boxcutter, comin all the way from Ireland. Boxcutter’s early production was a worthy descendent of Aphex or Squarepusher; glitchy – at times abrasive – IDM with undeniably soul. But his scope is vast, everything from broken 2-step to Bonobo-esque funk. Opening is our favorite cello-sax-dj trio, Archie Pelago (debuting their ableton PUSH live set) and the Perclab regulars.

RECONSTRVCT 2ND ANNI: Youngsta, V.I.V.E.K., Amit, Surprise Guest, Kahn and Neek, Joe Nice, True Nature at the 1896 [10PM/$25-60]
I don’t think there’s ever been a bigger dubstep lineup in NYC. Reconstrvct has become an NYC institution in the last 2 years, raising the bar to a level no other bass music events can touch (tho certainly it has inspired many to try, and that’s a good thing). More than the events, Reconstrvct has built a community who are dedicated and inspired by this music. Scores of folks are bussing and flying in to NYC for this show because there’s just nothing else in the US like this. Infinite props to Luke, Scott and Joe for creating a night that truly transcends partying and has become a place as holy as anything can be in this day and age.

Oy, this lineup. Lets start with Youngsta – one of the most renounced dubstep djs, his rinse.fm show has a fanatical following, winning him Best Dj in the dubstepforum awards two years in a row now. His energetic presence and peerless mixing are unmistakable. V.I.V.E.K. Is a true giant of the scene – he crushed it at the first anniversary. He’s made too many huge tunes to even name but both sides of his latest single (and the first on his new label, System Music) Asteroids/Over My Head has long since passed anthem status. When that drops on Saturday, I’ll put money on at least 2 wheel ups.

Kahn and Neek are two of the illest producers in grime – Backchat is honestly one of the sickest tunes I’ve heard in the last year (and Chevy aint far behind). Apparently they’re getting a TWO HOUR set, so prepare to get deep. Now Amit’s a newer name to me but his tune Acid Trip has also become a reconstrvct anthem. Oh AND there’s a special surprise guest – last year that turned out to be PINCH. This year? I have a guess. Add to that the two greatest residents ever (True Nature warming it up and Joe Nice finishing it out) and a truly massive private warehouse venue, and you’ve got yrself a proper 2 year anniversary for our favorite party.

NICE RENDER: Taste Tester, Hydrabadd, No Eyes, The Orator, Kuato, Knomad at Actor’s Playhouse [11PM/$5-10]
Taste Tester and Hydrabadd are beat makers from Atlanta, currently on tour (check out the sweet promo mix). They’ve collaborated on a bunch of tracks, taking rnb samples and neon arpeggios and mashing them with cloud rap beats, Jersey Club, and juke. Listen to this remix they did and tell me you aren’t in love with whatever the fuck this music is. Joining them are No Eyes, with some more abstract/ambient beats, organizers The Orator and Kuato who will bring a diverse spread of bass, and personal favorite Knomad (founder of OnTheSly). All this tasty bass music, on a funktion-1 system for $5? You betcha.

TIGERMILK: secret guest (Night Slugs), Dj Uniique, Obey City b2b Doctor Jeep, Kuato, The Orator at 70 N 6th St [10PM/$10-15]
A new party from Kuato (of Partyguy Records) and Nick Concklin aka The Orator designed to highlight the connections between many genres of bass music (much like this mailing list!).  Secret Night Slugs headliner is just the cherry on top (hint – it’s probably the one who lives in NYC). Ferocious jersey club/ghettotech from DJ Uniique  should be a treat; Doctor Jeep is one of our favorite bass music dj/producers (check his recent mixpak radio session), and he’s going b2b with another longtime fav, Obey City.  Plus sets from the founders – who clearly know Brooklyn bass music to have put together such a great lineup. Could this be the bass music party we’ve been waiting for?

Cromie, Sage and the Archie boys were all regulars of the ‘tax back in the Cove era, so you know it’s a family affair. Archie Pelago live at Glasslands for Discovery Party March 9, 2013

A recent live set from the Archie Pelago, recorded live at Glasslands for Discovery Party on  March 9. One of the reasons I love these dudes so much is their versatility. You could say that’s by design; the trio is a DJ (Dan Hirshorn) and two live musicians (Zach Koeber on Saxaphone and Greg Heffernan on Cello) which gives them a lot of range, stylistically.

But it’s also by choice. A week before this set was recorded, I saw them at Freecandy where their set was largely 160 bpm stuff – juke, jungle and the like. That feel was perfect for the Astronautico party, which leans towards the experimental edges of bass music. Then they turn around and play an almost all-house set (with a fucking awesome techno curveball from Randomer towards the end) for Discovery. Judging by how the whole crowd was dancing, it was the right choice.  Enjoy.

VITAMIN B: DJ Zinc plus DJ Shakey, Barney Iller, Tektite, Tim the Enchanter at House of Yes [10PM/$10]

There aren’t many DJs who have been producing for 20 years and are still relevant, aside from DJ Zinc (ok, maybe Zed Bias?). From his early days as a junglist, producing genre-defining tunes like “super sharp shooter”, to recent hits with A-Trak and Miss Dynamite, he’s is still smashing it up worldwide. Zinc’s unique brand of “crack house”, fusing grime, breaks and electro into an undeniably danceable blend. Get there early or buy advance tickets, because House of Yes fills up fast.

I know we gush about Archie Pelago quite a bit, but I mean, can you blame us? Have you SEEN them? If not, then it’s your lucky day – they’re headlining tonight at everyone’s favorite psychadelic parking garage/art gallery, Free Candy. Sharing the bill is their collaborator, HxdB (pronounced Hexadecibel), who has been producing exquisite, deep, genre-spanning bass music out of Vancouver for years now. MUTUAL DREAMING: DJ Dez Andrés, Anthony Naples, Magic Touch at 285 Kent [10PM/$12]
Andres is one of the best DJs I’ve ever seen. Period. Recently I heard him described as “if DIlla made played house”. Expect a lot of soul, dusty grooves, and impeccable taste. A one of a kind artist who could have only come from Detroit, Dez was  formerly the turntablist for Slum Village, and also has a lengthy discography of house tunes and edits.  Mutual Dreaming throws a great party too – they’ll be transforming 285 Kent with reinforced sound and a parachute ceiling for extra vibe absorption.

LOW: Matt Shadetek, Nate Mars, Lusta, Tyeze at Happy Ending [10PM/FREE]
A great choice if you’re looking for something a little more intimate and unexpected. Shadetek has been rolling with the Dutty Artz crew for years, making all manner of global bass – that’s horribly oversimplifying the man’s talents, but they’re broad. Nate Mars is a dubspot affiliate, with excellent production chops ranging from dubstep to digital cumbia. Lusta takes a grab-bag approach to bass, but keeps it dark and driving, while Tyeze seems to have more of a wompy west-coast take on the low end.

CAPRICORN: Tim Sweeney, Mike Simonetti, Dust at Bossa Nova Social Club [10PM/FREE]
Tim Sweeney’s long-running Beats In Space radio show has always been a source of phenomenal music, both new and old, as well as host to an incredible spectrum of guests. Apparently his live sets are pretty phenomenal too. Mike Simonetti has also been killing dancefloors for decades with an adventurous mix of italo, house, and disco. Plus Bossa Nova Social Club is one of the best new spots – far enough out to keep the crowd dedicated, but also boasting a gorgeous custom soundsystem and plenty of space to dance.

Built By MeanRed: Daedalus, Salva, Samo Soundboy, Ryan Hemsworth at LPR [11PM/$15]

MeanRed once again has brought together a massive lineup of sonic experimentalists. Daedalus is still one of the most creative DJs I’ve heard in ages (beach boys over hard house? balkan brass over techno? and it works!)  and has a really unique and compelling lighting rig. Salva has experienced meteoric success this year, between a slot on the BBC and his trap edit of Mercy. But he has been making killer 808 beats for years before it became trendy (check his 2011 release, Complex Housing). Samo Soundboy will be bringing the heavy bass, and Ryan Hemsworth has been killing the future-rnb thing lately.

SKATALITES, Subatomic Sound System, Van Gordon Martin Band at Brooklyn Bowl [8PM/$10]

Without dub, there’d be no dance music as we know it. The Skatalites are a LEGENDARY dub outfit, more or less inventing the sound of rocksteady/first wave ska. Officially forming in Kingston Jamaica in 1964, the original members had been jamming together since the mid-50s. While the cast has switched up a bit, the soul and history is still there. Support from Brooklyn’s finest dubwise electronic label, Subatomic Sound System, is a natural fit.

Weekend Womp Forecast

Tonight our top recommendation has to be Percussion Lab – they’re throwing a party for their first compilation, Cambio. The lineup is some of our favorite NYC talent including Braille (Praveeen of Sepalcure), Contakt (Turrbotax) and our favorite 3 piece, Archie Pelago (check their feature in XLR8R yesterday!). UK label Night Slugs is throwing their first warehouse rave in NYC, with founding members Bok Bok, Girl Unit and L-Vis 1990 plus their NYC associate, Kingdom. Advance tickets are sold out but get there at 11 for the limited door – this one will pack out and go very late.

Also tonight is GHE20 GOTH1K, the famously genre-melting party where you will hear them “play Al-Jezeera in the club, and you will like it”. Venus X and $hayne plus ballroom master MikeQ and Rizzla, whose relentless riddims will make you sweat. All black or white dress preferred.  Finally if you want breaks, look no further than Vitamin B vs No Parking on the Dancefloor – this is the third annual combo party these guys have thrown, so you can expect shenanigans and nonstop booty-movin. If yr still moving after 4am, head to 440 Irving for Afters with Musa (but we didn’t tell you).

And that’s just tonight! SATURDAY, dnb heads are in for a treat with the legends AK-1200 and Gridlock at SRB. Discovery Party is always a good time, and they have detroit legend Mike Huckaby at Glasslands. Lots of funky house, boogie and disco. And over at 285 Kent, Sweater Beats, Branchez, Slava and Jaw Jam will be playing some slowed, sexy, eclectic, futuristic r&b-influenced productions.

But hold your horses, because I hear there’s a MASSIVE Trouble & Bass vs. Mixpak warehouse rave happening at 1040 Metropolitan Saturday, going very very late. The lineup will be dropping in the next 24 hours but you can trust that it’s a doozy, featuring allstars from both crews.

Want more info about any of these? Check the the events page for links, and sign up for the WompList to get this + the updated calendar in your email every friday! Form is at the very top of this page.

Fuck yeah! See you on the floor!

Archie Pelago Sonic Router mix & interview

I’m positively bursting with joy at all the attention my homies Archie Pelago have been getting as of late. Mary Anne Hobbs is a fan. So’s Gilles Peterson. And reigning DMC DJ Shiftee.  They just did a fabulous mix for ep 121 of the very reputable Sonic Router podcast, and a lovely, in-depth interview that really gives you a nice sense of why these guys are different, where the magic comes from (there’s even a diagram).  Anyway, go read it and have a listen below!
