WOMPLIST 48: Swindle/Starkey, Terrence Parker, EPROM, Kryptic Minds, Astro Nautico, Oneman, Tiki Disco, Mister Sunday

FRIDAY, JUNE 7

Terrence Parker, Free Magic & Faso at Cameo Gallery [12AM/$12]
Terrence Parker is the fucking truth. His high energy, raw, soulful house selections and unbelievable turntablism have made him a legend amongst legends. Watch this and this right now and tell me you aren’t blown away. And yeah, he uses a telephone headset instead of headphones. Why? Well, when you can DJ like TP, it really doesn’t matter. Discovery Party residents Free Magic & Faso warm things up with their always on-point house and disco selections.

SUBVERSE: Kryptic Minds (UK), Asylum (UK), SNGL, Rozi, I.N.I., Max Mischief, Tsunami Bass Sound at The Paper Box [9PM/$20]
Proper UK dubstep on a proper system. The duo of Kryptic Minds pillars of the classic dubstep sound, and they’re also bringing over Asylum from the UK. Local bassweight purveyors, SNGL, Rozi (who runs the Tuba label) and Subverse-NYC residents I.N.I. and Max Mischief complete the bill. Worth noting that there’s a late night b2b Neurofunk DnB sesh scheduled between Asylum and I.N.I. All this will be booming over the famous Tsunami Bass soundsystem with 4 labhorn subs, so get ready to FEEL it.

Astro Nautico: Jaw Jamz, CZ, Starchild & The New Romantic, plus Obey City, The Range, Michael Jukeson, Tsunami Bass Sound at Free Candy [10PM/$5wRSVP/$10]
Astro Nautico’s monthly experimental beats party in Brooklyn’s raviest parking garage/art gallery (it makes sense when you’re there). Not as familiar with this lineup so I’m not going to attempt to summarize, but Astro has become a name you can trust in underground bass music. Also featuring Tsunami Bass Sound (busy friday for those wizards!) and guest VJs for your ear and eye pleasure.

SATURDAY, JUNE 8

Trouble & Bass: SWINDLE (deep medi, UK), Starkey, DJ Slow, Star Eyes, Strange VIP at Steel Drums [10PM/$10]
Swindle is a hell of a musician. He takes purple dubstep and infuses it with a triple shot of jazz-funk synth lines, which he executes brilliantly with incredible keyboard chops. His first track, Do The Jazz, changed my fucking life when I heard his label-mates Silkie & Quest drop it at Cielo last year. I’ve still never heard anything like it, except for Swindle’s other productions. Swindle’s full length record comes out later this month – stream it here. Also headlining is the exceptionally talented ‘street bass’ producer Starkey, from Philly. He’s had an incredible run of sci-fi themed albums and EPs over the last few years (Orbits being one of my favorite albums of 2012). Finally, T&B crew Star Eyes and Strange VIP will be warming up, plus special guest DJ Slow, still in town from RBMA.

EPROM, Dubbel Dutch, Sleepyhead at Glasslands Gallery [11:30PM/$10]
Eprom has been mutating hip hop beats into delightfully monstrous bass music for 7 or 8 years now. A perfect example is his Kendrick remix, which has thoroughtly blown up in the last few weeks. His first LP, Metahuman, came out last year on Rwina Records, and earned wide praise for his glitched-out 808s and crunchy, low slung basslines. Personally, his Pipe Dream EP is still my favorite. It’s a shame that this is competing with the Starkey/Swindle show, as Starkey is actually a huge fan of Eprom’s; listen to him gush over some classic Eprom here (“you can’t play anything after this!”). Excellently chosen support acts, too – Dubbel Dutch always tears it down with his turbo-tropical club jams, and Broke City resident Sleepyhead is quite an accomplished bass music producer and DJ in his own right.

FRIDAY, JANUARY 31

MIXPAK: Jubilee (Release Party), Star Eyes, Burt Fox, Dubbel Dutch, Dre Skull, The Large at The Call Box [10PM/FREE]

Release Party for Jubilee’s single Pull Ova/1-95 single, out this week on Mixpak. It’s a slammin pair of Miami Bass tracks, already receiving play at Fabric, Boiler Room and many more fine outlets. Longtime collaborators Star Eyes (of Trouble&Bass) and Burt Fox guest. Star Eyes will no doubt bring some heavy bass (as Troublemakers are wont to do) and Burt Fox has promised a “super miami set” in tribute to Jubilee’s musical heritage. The rest of the Mixpak crew will be slinging their meanest riddims as well. The Call Box is kinda out there (around the corner from Steel Drums) but with Mixpak’s devoted following, no cover and such a well-liked guest of honor, this one is gonna pack out.

RINSED: Bareskin (Hypercolour – UK), Jamie Antonelli, Dan Wender, Blacky II at secret location tba [11PM-6AM/$10-25]

Rinsed is taking a gamble with this one, bringing out a pair of basically unknown producers to headline. But they’ve become such an institution over the last two years that I’m fairly certain that won’t hurt their turnout. Bareskin (cue Mary Anne Hobbs voice) is just 19 years old but has already played all over the UK and Europe. His tunes are the kind of magical UK club material that can make 3-4am last forever (unnecessary in this instance as Rinsed goes till 6). Syrupy garage house, chopped Rnb vocals, and some warehousey 303s – it’s kinda like Boddika by way of Jacques Greene.

Year of the Future: Honey Jaws, Dis Fig, KeekeeKud at Pianos [1-4AM/FREE]

A newer party devoted to exactly our kind of bass music – the flyer promises garage, footwork, grime, house, dubstep and more – check the promo mix. It’s a weird slot, 1-4am at Pianos, but that also makes for a nice focused party. Resident DJ Dis Fig aka Felichen is definitely a badgyal on the decks – I’ve been lurking her soundcloud quite a bit and every single one of her mixes is on point in terms of both mixing and selection. She seems equally at home with footwork, house/techno and uk bass and hip hop. This is also the DJ debut of Honey Jaws (on right at 1am), who you may recognize from the front fucking row of every good bass show we rep.

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 1

Mr Saturday Night at Glasslands [11:30PM/$20]

The friendliest house & techno party ever is trying on Glasslands for size while their normal venue is on hiatus. They’ll be bringing in their own soundsystem and transforming the space to make things suitably special. This one is also sold out, but there will be some tickets at the door. Mr. Saturday has a very devoted following and there’s not a ton going on in terms of house/techno this night, so if you do want to get a ticket you had better outside at 11:15.

Break Science, Paul Basic at Bowery Ballroom [9PM/$15]

Brooklyn-based duo Break Science make some excellent, semi-ragey glitch hop and dubstep. It’s obviously aimed at the Bisco set (especially given their latest release being on Pretty Lights Music) but this also satisfies my craving for Glitch Mob-style west coast turrbocrunk. They’ve been touring their live set heavily for years, so you can expect a pretty tight show.

SATURDAY, JULY 20

Verboten pres Trouble & Bass vs Dirtybird: Kode9, Salva, Worthy, J.Phlip, DKDS, Drop the Lime, Star Eyes, Strange VIP, Tony Quattro at Sullivan Room [10PM/$20]
THIS. Probably the best lineup we’ve seen all summer. Dirtybird is doing more than anyone to keep stateside house music funky, vital and booty-tastic. J.Phlip (mix) and Worthy (mix) will be out from California repping them. The Trouble & Bass crew always kills it – they basically define ‘killing it’. Especially that young buck Tony Quattro – last T&B party, he and Dr. Jeep had the dancefloor WILIN before 11PM. And you know we love DKDS.

Oh, and a few other huge special guests like Salva (fresh off his BBC residency) and Kode9 (he runs this label Hyperdub, you mighta heard of it). Both are certified bass music geniuses. So that’s, uh, FOUR headliners, and the best damn support lineup in NYC. Check out our full feature on the event here for all the info, a buttload of mixes and set times (if we can get em).

ESSENTIAL PARTYING: Trouble & Bass ft. Kanji Kinetic + DZ

T&B 3 year anniversary party with Skream & Benga. Photos by hificartel.com

DZ said it best: “Dubstep is Boring“. That’s why Trouble & Bass is so damn amazing. While every other party promoter seems to be hopping on the dubstep bandwagon (that’s been in a ditch for a few years now*), Trouble & Bass is creating their own genre of much more exciting party music. For 3+ years now, the T&B crew (AC Slater, Star Eyes, Drop the Lime, and The Captain) have been obliterating dancefloors across NYC and beyond with their signature Brooklyn Bass. They always make a point that these aren’t club nights, they’re parties – and not just any parties. Consistently, more than any other entity that throws em, they throw the best damn parties in New York City. Everyone who comes out is sexy, dressed fresh to death, and dancin like a motherfucker.

Their special guest this week is DZ (who gets plenty of press) and the criminally slept-on  Kanji Kinetic, who (much like Chrissy Murderbot or the post-deserving Squire of Gothos) is pioneering some serious speed wobble – like happy hardcore on downers or if a rave got twisted through a moebius strip; it’s 140-150 BPMs of neck-breakin, lose-your-shit relentlessness. This is workout music – get ready to sweat on Saturday!

*for the record, I ain’t hating on dubstep – lord knows how many times I’ve lost my shit to Eastern Jam, Caspa, Rusko, etc…but I’m definitely hating on everyone who promotes a party and plasters their flyer/event listing with the word “dubstep” (invariably in all-caps) as though it’s some magic salve that will transform their trendy culture-grab into a halcyon blasty blast of a good time. Just because you’re not funded by a corporation doesn’t mean you aren’t engaging in cultural appropriation. Your whackness is seen, and noted.

WOMPLIST 55: Reconstrvct, Grenier & XI, Ben UFO, Goth Trad, Boxcutter, Taste Tester & Hydrabadd, Mess Kid

FRIDAY, JULY 26

DESCENT: Grenier, XI, Congi (US debut), Prism, Blysk at House of Yes [10PM/$20-25]
Biggest lineup yet from the Descent crew. This is the US debut of Congi, a dubstep producer from the UK, whose jazzy inflections and laid back vibes will delight anyone who enjoys Author or Phaeleh. Also headlining are future bass pioneer XI and Grenier / DJG – who also happen to be old friends, and will be doing a very special b2b. I’ve been in love with XI beats ever since I heard his scene-stealing remix of Sepalcure. And Grenier? Oh gosh. His set at reconstrvct earlier this year was one of the best I’ve ever seen; a brilliant, flawless, relentlessly energized all vinyl set of all styles of bass music. His free album, VOIDS III, is easily one of the best LPs of this year. Warming it up will be Descent founder and resident Blysk, and Boston’s dubstep virtuoso, Prism. Percussion Lab x Rudimentary Records: Boxcutter (Planet Mu ✈ Ireland), Enoe, Archie Pelago, Seafloor, Braille at Cameo Gallery [12AM/$7-10]
God bless Percussion Lab. In addition to hosting one of the best mix repositories on the internet, they’re always booking the most interesting producers. This time around it’s Planet Mu’s Boxcutter, comin all the way from Ireland. Boxcutter’s early production was a worthy descendent of Aphex or Squarepusher; glitchy – at times abrasive – IDM with undeniably soul. But his scope is vast, everything from broken 2-step to Bonobo-esque funk. Opening is our favorite cello-sax-dj trio, Archie Pelago (debuting their ableton PUSH live set) and the Perclab regulars.

RECONSTRVCT 2ND ANNI: Youngsta, V.I.V.E.K., Amit, Surprise Guest, Kahn and Neek, Joe Nice, True Nature at the 1896 [10PM/$25-60]
I don’t think there’s ever been a bigger dubstep lineup in NYC. Reconstrvct has become an NYC institution in the last 2 years, raising the bar to a level no other bass music events can touch (tho certainly it has inspired many to try, and that’s a good thing). More than the events, Reconstrvct has built a community who are dedicated and inspired by this music. Scores of folks are bussing and flying in to NYC for this show because there’s just nothing else in the US like this. Infinite props to Luke, Scott and Joe for creating a night that truly transcends partying and has become a place as holy as anything can be in this day and age.

Oy, this lineup. Lets start with Youngsta – one of the most renounced dubstep djs, his rinse.fm show has a fanatical following, winning him Best Dj in the dubstepforum awards two years in a row now. His energetic presence and peerless mixing are unmistakable. V.I.V.E.K. Is a true giant of the scene – he crushed it at the first anniversary. He’s made too many huge tunes to even name but both sides of his latest single (and the first on his new label, System Music) Asteroids/Over My Head has long since passed anthem status. When that drops on Saturday, I’ll put money on at least 2 wheel ups.

Kahn and Neek are two of the illest producers in grime – Backchat is honestly one of the sickest tunes I’ve heard in the last year (and Chevy aint far behind). Apparently they’re getting a TWO HOUR set, so prepare to get deep. Now Amit’s a newer name to me but his tune Acid Trip has also become a reconstrvct anthem. Oh AND there’s a special surprise guest – last year that turned out to be PINCH. This year? I have a guess. Add to that the two greatest residents ever (True Nature warming it up and Joe Nice finishing it out) and a truly massive private warehouse venue, and you’ve got yrself a proper 2 year anniversary for our favorite party.

NICE RENDER: Taste Tester, Hydrabadd, No Eyes, The Orator, Kuato, Knomad at Actor’s Playhouse [11PM/$5-10]
Taste Tester and Hydrabadd are beat makers from Atlanta, currently on tour (check out the sweet promo mix). They’ve collaborated on a bunch of tracks, taking rnb samples and neon arpeggios and mashing them with cloud rap beats, Jersey Club, and juke. Listen to this remix they did and tell me you aren’t in love with whatever the fuck this music is. Joining them are No Eyes, with some more abstract/ambient beats, organizers The Orator and Kuato who will bring a diverse spread of bass, and personal favorite Knomad (founder of OnTheSly). All this tasty bass music, on a funktion-1 system for $5? You betcha.

Submotion Orchestra mixes UKF Podcast

Absolutely stunning set of tunes from Ruckspin, mixing as Submotion Orchestra. Capturing the Submotion vibe is a daunting task, but everything you love about them is fully represented here – tasteful vocals, jazzier progressions, and a whole lot of soul & bass.

Things start off extremely gently with tracks by Quark, The Weeknd and Burial before Machine Drum’s now-classic remix of Bonobo serves as a transition into deeper territory. Weaving original tunes with excellent Submotion Remixes, Ruckspin subtly increasing the temperature until boiling over with the euphoric Planas‘s single “Better Days”. Then we cool off with some classic purple synths and tremendously soulful cuts by Jack Sparrow and others.

DJ Unkut – Trading precious metals

Another absolutely ridiculous mix from DJ Unkut, the German turntablist who you may know from his game-changing “Beware of ze Average Man” routine. The tracklist is pretty ambitious, pulling from the best of worldwide mutant futuristic beat scenes. Yes, there’s some trap. And it’s damn well placed, serving to establish the energy upfront before moving into more interesting, melodic descendents of instrumental hip-hop. The second half of this mix gets into some classier european strains of experimental, 808-heavy, 160bpm stuff, with Para One, Krampfhaft, Om Unit and Machine Drum. Featured as well as are some of the finest American, non-east coast production; notably Colorado’s Paper Diamond, Chicago’s Chrissy Murderbot, Lorn (outta Wisconsin) and California’s Freddy Todd.

Expertly blended and seasoned with choice scratches, Unkut delivers a concise, furious bar-raising mix that invariably leaves one wanting more. Fortunately, he has a few more on his soundcloud that are all equally well crafted.

Ana Sia 2012 Mix Series

Ana Sia is goin hard in 2012. She’s just relaunched her website, is helming Frite Nite (putting out tracks by Lazer Sword, Salva, NastyNasty, Distal, Grenier, B.Bravo, EPROM and more) and has just completed a very exciting 4 part mix series. The first mix, Sparkly Eyes Technique, is a bold and (to me) unexpected move

Tom Encore creates a Moral Panic! [JAN 2012 STUDIO MIX] free d/l!

Doc Krank has never lead me astray before. This time, it’s a mix from Tom Encore, and it’s a class-A facemelter. An ambitious tracklist, some might even say eyebrow-raising, but oh boy does it deliver. The tempo is all over the place, and it pulls from an impressive spectrum of party music. But the mixing

LOTS of quality mixes dropped this week – let’s get into the jammzzz: Budapest’s iamyank dropped the third in his mix series, Bassclectic. The first two parts were instant classics – full of gritty, stompy, tasty glitch-hop. This one is another fine example of his excellent selection and mixing skills – plenty of super womped-out
