Just got word that we’ve got 2 tickets to giveaway to Meanred’s Dark Disco tonight, featuring the triumphant return of Joker. It’s a bit last minute (normally we like to hype it on twitter for a few days) so this one will be for the heads who are paying attention.
To win, just enter your email below to get the WompList, our friday email about the best bass music shows in NYC. We recommend top picks for the weekend, and the next few months. It’s also the only way to get in on exclusive ticket giveaways (like this one), reduced lists and other cool perks. We’ll pick a winner randomly at 5PM Saturday.
Once you’re on the WompList, you can double your chances of winning by tweeting about the contest (more on that below).
Step 1: Enter with your email
Everyone who signs up for the WompList today before 5PM EST will be entered to win 2 tickets to the show (your name will be on the list at the door with a +1, so find a date).
Step 2: Tweet About it
If you’d like to get two chances instead of one to win, tweet something like this:
im gonna win tickets to #darkdisco w\ @joker @martypartymusic @theDKDS cuz the #womplist hooks it up » bit.ly/jokerparty
Edit as you see fit, just make sure to include the hashtags #darkdisco and #womplist, the usernames @joker and @martypartymusic, and the bit.ly link to this page. Everyone who tweets something like that will get a second entry in the drawing for the tickets.
Fine Print:
Contest closes at 5PM EST on Saturday, February 8th. 1 Winner will be chosen randomly. Winner will be notified via email and/or twitter. Winner must respond within 1 hour to claim their prize, or another winner will be chosen
Tickets are courtesy of MeanRed and our friends at PatchworkNYC. Winner will be on the house list with a +1, so they and a guest will get entry free of charge. Winner may be required to show photo ID (event is 21+).
Been listening to this mix about twice a day all week now, so I reckon it’s time to share it. Ostensibly a mix to promote their upcoming Miami shows, but for those of us outside the 305, what matters is that it’s an hour of killer funky house. Great selection of newer stuff (Duke Dumont, Oliver $, Dirtybird, Maceo Plex, etc) sandwiched by some deep cuts I’d never heard. And the transitions here are just immaculate.
DKDS is a DJ duo from Brooklyn. The name might stand for Dutch Kills Death Squad, and I think they’re cousins, but that’s all besides the point: this mix kills, and if you see these guys on a flyer, you should go see them.

We have so much love for Trouble & Bass. For the 7th birthday tonight (that’s like 200 in club night years), founder Drop the lime has put together a mix featuring 7 years of T&B anthems. If you’ve never been to a T&B party, I couldn’t think of a better place to start. If you’re a longtime troublemaker, get ready for some serious #FEELS. Chock full of ravey, wobbly, underground sound goodness, it’s the perfect bass snack to get yr weekend going.
For more info on the year 7 birthday bash tonight (taking over BOTH floors of Sullivan Room), click HERE for our featured event.

HOUSE-O-MATIC: Contakt, Space Jam, C-Sick, Mayster & Ben Steidel (Lemonade) at Over The Eight [10PM/FREE]
Last minute house music party from the Turrbo crew, with longtime homie Ben of Lemonade. I’ve been saying for a minute now that Over the Eight is a total gem of a venue; a low-key spot with a great back room – killer sound, and a spacious wooden dancefloor.

BROKE CITY: The Range, D. Gookin (dj set), Sleepyhead, Figgy, Dunes at Bizarre Bushwick [10PM/FREE]
The Range is a super ridiculously dope footwork producer, who has released stuff on Donkey Pitch and Astro Nautico. Been killing it for a few years now. D.Gookin does weirdo pop singersongwriter ish, but will be spinning a DJ set – plus the residents here totally rule and it’s free.

ULTRADEMON, SSION (dj set), Gatekeeper (dj set) at Glasslands [11:30PM/$5]
Ultrademon is known as the godfather of Seapunk – wait, don’t leave! While the internet aesthetic might be goofy, the beats kinda rule. Gatekeeper and SSION too – all three are unpredictable but thoroughly enjoyable – which is exactly what we love about Brooklyn’s psychadelic electronic scene right now.

Verboten pres Trouble & Bass vs Dirtybird: Kode9, Salva, Worthy, J.Phlip, DKDS, Drop the Lime, Star Eyes, Strange VIP, Tony Quattro at Sullivan Room [10PM/$20]
THIS. Probably the best lineup we’ve seen all summer. Dirtybird is doing more than anyone to keep stateside house music funky, vital and booty-tastic. J.Phlip (mix) and Worthy (mix) will be out from California repping them. The Trouble & Bass crew always kills it – they basically define ‘killing it’. Especially that young buck Tony Quattro – last T&B party, he and Dr. Jeep had the dancefloor WILIN before 11PM. And you know we love DKDS.
Oh, and a few other huge special guests like Salva (fresh off his BBC residency) and Kode9 (he runs this label Hyperdub, you mighta heard of it). Both are certified bass music geniuses. So that’s, uh, FOUR headliners, and the best damn support lineup in NYC. Check out our full feature on the event here for all the info, a buttload of mixes and set times (if we can get em).

BROKE CITY: Rabit (Keysound), Kuato (Partyguy Records), Sleepyhead, Mohegan Son, Dunes at Bizarre Bushwick [10PM/FREE] Broke City is the Bushwick-based, perpetually free party dedicated to unpredictable permutations of house, juke, rnb, beats, and other dope shit that doesn’t have a name yet. Special guests this week are: Rabit aka Glacial Sound, with his dark, minimal grime beats, and Kuato, founder of Partyguy records and a real connoisseur of NYC party-tastic heavy bass. Check out our feature on this event below for mixes from the guests and all the info.

NIGHT PEOPLE: Curses, DKDS, Eli Escobar, Blu Jemz, Lloydski at Le Bain [10PM/FREE] Record release party for Drop The Lime’s techno alias, Curses. Check out the singleand his promo mix. Very different than his Trouble & Bass material. Still dark, very dancefloor oriented, just trading in the rockabilly swagger and dubstep bass for Vangelis synths and icey drums. Collaborators DKDS and Night People residents Blu Jemz, Lloydski and Eli Escobar will keep the darkness going.

a/jus/ted at Kinfolk Studios [10PM/FREE]
Super-heavy disco all night from the a/jus/ted, the duo of 20-something Eddie Mars and Justin Strauss, a 3 decade veteran of NYC dance music. Check out their excellent june mix. This isn’t nice disco. No string arrangements or diva vocals here. Just driving basslines and extra crispy drums, perfect for dancing in dark rooms or driving all night.

DISCOVERY: Free Magic, Faso, and Chris Costello at Glasslands Gallery [11:30/FREE]
Our favorite disco party (4 years in August!) is doing a resident night for FREE! How can this be? Their home venue, Glasslands, has just installed a big new soundsystem, which means Discovery doesn’t have to pay to bring in extra sound. And they’re passing the savings onto us. Really excited to hear the new sound there, as Glasslands will be hosting some acts that demand it later this summer (Phaeleh, Lil’ Silva and L-Vis 1990).

Terrence Parker, Free Magic & Faso at Cameo Gallery [12AM/$12]
Terrence Parker is the fucking truth. His high energy, raw, soulful house selections and unbelievable turntablism have made him a legend amongst legends. Watch this and this right now and tell me you aren’t blown away. And yeah, he uses a telephone headset instead of headphones. Why? Well, when you can DJ like TP, it really doesn’t matter. Discovery Party residents Free Magic & Faso warm things up with their always on-point house and disco selections.

SUBVERSE: Kryptic Minds (UK), Asylum (UK), SNGL, Rozi, I.N.I., Max Mischief, Tsunami Bass Sound at The Paper Box [9PM/$20]
Proper UK dubstep on a proper system. The duo of Kryptic Minds pillars of the classic dubstep sound, and they’re also bringing over Asylum from the UK. Local bassweight purveyors, SNGL, Rozi (who runs the Tuba label) and Subverse-NYC residents I.N.I. and Max Mischief complete the bill. Worth noting that there’s a late night b2b Neurofunk DnB sesh scheduled between Asylum and I.N.I. All this will be booming over the famous Tsunami Bass soundsystem with 4 labhorn subs, so get ready to FEEL it.

Astro Nautico: Jaw Jamz, CZ, Starchild & The New Romantic, plus Obey City, The Range, Michael Jukeson, Tsunami Bass Sound at Free Candy [10PM/$5wRSVP/$10]
Astro Nautico’s monthly experimental beats party in Brooklyn’s raviest parking garage/art gallery (it makes sense when you’re there). Not as familiar with this lineup so I’m not going to attempt to summarize, but Astro has become a name you can trust in underground bass music. Also featuring Tsunami Bass Sound (busy friday for those wizards!) and guest VJs for your ear and eye pleasure.

Trouble & Bass: SWINDLE (deep medi, UK), Starkey, DJ Slow, Star Eyes, Strange VIP at Steel Drums [10PM/$10]
Swindle is a hell of a musician. He takes purple dubstep and infuses it with a triple shot of jazz-funk synth lines, which he executes brilliantly with incredible keyboard chops. His first track, Do The Jazz, changed my fucking life when I heard his label-mates Silkie & Quest drop it at Cielo last year. I’ve still never heard anything like it, except for Swindle’s other productions. Swindle’s full length record comes out later this month – stream it here. Also headlining is the exceptionally talented ‘street bass’ producer Starkey, from Philly. He’s had an incredible run of sci-fi themed albums and EPs over the last few years (Orbits being one of my favorite albums of 2012). Finally, T&B crew Star Eyes and Strange VIP will be warming up, plus special guest DJ Slow, still in town from RBMA.

EPROM, Dubbel Dutch, Sleepyhead at Glasslands Gallery [11:30PM/$10]
Eprom has been mutating hip hop beats into delightfully monstrous bass music for 7 or 8 years now. A perfect example is his Kendrick remix, which has thoroughtly blown up in the last few weeks. His first LP, Metahuman, came out last year on Rwina Records, and earned wide praise for his glitched-out 808s and crunchy, low slung basslines. Personally, his Pipe Dream EP is still my favorite. It’s a shame that this is competing with the Starkey/Swindle show, as Starkey is actually a huge fan of Eprom’s; listen to him gush over some classic Eprom here (“you can’t play anything after this!”). Excellently chosen support acts, too – Dubbel Dutch always tears it down with his turbo-tropical club jams, and Broke City resident Sleepyhead is quite an accomplished bass music producer and DJ in his own right.

The snow can fuck with you. It can make you want to stay in. Even cool guys like Corey Booker will tell you to cancel your party. But just remember – you get out of a party what you put in to it. When the weather gets tought, the jams get tougher. The DJs will throw down somethin extra special. The people who made it out will get down even harder.
So despite the storm cancelling two headliners tonight (James T. Cotton and Kastle both had their flights cancelled), we still advise you to get out there and boogie. Tonight at OUTPUT there’s gonna be some killer house music from Kyle Hall and Jus Ed, amongst others – just make sure to dress warm and get there early since there will almost certainly be a line by 11. MUTUAL DREAMING lost their headliner, but they’re still reinforcing the sound and hanging a parachute from the ceilng, plus they’ve brought in 2 more DJs to fill out the bill, so if yr looking for some raw techno and live PAs, that’s the spot. And the RINSED showcase of the Symbols label is still happening even though label boss Kastle is grounded. You can rest assured that Druid Cloak, Figgy, and the Rinsed residents will step it up.
Everything is still on for Saturday as far as we know. Joe Goddard (of Hot Chip) will be DJing at Cameo Gallery (which is rapidly becoming one of our favorite venues). If you think this is just another guy from another indie band deciding he’s a DJ, think again – Joe is a very talented house producer, and I hear his sets deliver. Head down to Chinatown for MeanRed’s semi-quarterly DARK DISCO bash, this time featuring heavyweights Martyn + Jacques Greene, plus the young genre blurring producer Morri$ and support from our favorite DJ duo in town, DKDS. Drum n Bass heads already know that ICICLE is having his NY debut on saturday, but you gotta RSVP to find out where. 285 Kent has more techno for ya on Saturday, with mystery producer Rrose. And finally, Brooklyn Bowl has the always entertaining RJD2.

See you on the floor!
Tonight there’s truly something for everyone. Our pick is Addison Groove at Cameo Gallery – this guy is always on the bleeding edge of bass music (and is now running a new label, LIT). As Headhunter he was my gateway to deep dubstep, and it’s incalculable how many people who got turned on to juke/footwork by his immortal tune Footcrab. Every time I see him play, he turns my brain inside out. With support from FaltyDL (whose new LP on Ninjatune is SO GOOD) and SciFi&Fantasy label head Max Pearl
If you like Breaks, then the only place to be tonight is House of Yes for VITAMIN B. They have finally booked Deekline, who is about as legendary as they come for a genre. Plus the residents Barney Iller, Tektite and Tim The Enchanter are all veteran badasses – this one is for serious dancers only (but they are opening up a second chillout room due to the huge expected turnout). Hit up ELECTRIC PUNANNY at the Paper Box tonight for a frenetic mix of dancehall, hip hop and all kinds of global bass – they’re celebrating the third installment of the mixtape series of the same name, and have OG producers Dubbel Dutch and Dre Skull.
VERBOTEN has tINI and Justin Martin at HIghline Ballroom tonight. There are a lot of Justins in house music, but none whose tunes are as funky and ubiquitous as his recent LP on Dirtybird, Ghettos and Gardens (and the two volumes of remixes it inspired). Expensive, but highline is a very nice venue and the crowd is gonna be mad hyped. Finally, if you’re looking for a weirder DIY vibe, hit up AstroNautico – they have an interesting spectrum of house music tonight from guests Braille (Praveen from Sepalcure) and some live hardware from Octa Octo. Plus the massive Tsunami Bass soundsystem (the one that powers Reconstrvct) and some very talented residents, all for just $8 with RSVP. And the space is really one of a kind (it’s a rave parking garage – no, really)
SATURDAY also has great options – the most interesting of which is definitely IDLE, put together by the Reconstrvct crew and BigUP magazine. It’s an art show featuring the work of Ashes57 (who did so much of the dope art for Outlook Festival) as well as a lineup of exceptionally talented experimental electronic music. No tickets at the door tho, so be sure to get one in advance if you want to go (secret BK location will also be annouced only to ticketholders day of). Over at Le Bain, our boys DKDS are headlining Night People – expect some serious dancefloor-oriented techno and house. Also, you may know two out of the three residents (Lloydski and Eli) from Bushwick’s finest dance party, Tiki Disco. Trust us when we say you’ll be in good hands. And for all you 90s ravers, DnB legend Photek is in the Webster Hall basement on saturday, while NinjaTune veteran DJ Vadim will be at Brooklyn Bowl for just eight bucks.
Also don’t neglect to check out all the new additions for February and March! We’ll be blessed to enjoy two more Reconstrvcts, the return of Bicep, Kyle Hall, Egyptrixx, Chrissy Murderbot, an Osgut Ton showcase at Output, a Dirtybird showcase at SRB, Turrbotax with Gerry Read and SO MUCH MORE.
