Discovery is bringing out Detroit Swindle, the hotly tipped house music duo from Berlin. Channeling a lifelong love of motown and soul through their drum machines, the two Berliners have been described as “if Dilla made house” – something I’ve also heard said about DJ Dez Andres, who played one of the best sets we’ve ever seen last summer. While keeping things on more restrained, deep house tip, Detroit Swindle will get you loose as hell. Also on the bill is Dirt Crew label boss Break 3000. Discovery Party residents Free Magic + Faso will be warming things up, and Glasslands will be looking and sounding better than you’ve ever seen it. Not only are they bringing in some serious sound reinforcement, but the new lighting installation will be in full effect.

One of the really standout artists I found this year was Streetlab. Based just down the road from us in Brooklyn, these two gents have been cranking out remixes that absolutely knock my socks off.
And today they announced via facebook that THEY ARE GIVING AWAY EVERY TRACK & REMIX THEY PRODUCED THIS YEAR. Click on that bigass link to get em! These are two prolific dudes – something like 20 remixes and another half dozen originals. And they all slay. In particular, I want to listen to that Hall & Oates remix all the goddamn time.
Their style really reminds me of The Philip Steir remix of “Magic Carpet Ride” from the GO soundtrack (anyone else play that one till your discman broke?) – they preserve the vibe of the original track while amping it up with modern production… par example, peep their most excellent remix of Gimme Shelter below:
The Rolling Stones – Gimme Shelter (streetlab mix) by Streetlab
So what are you waiting for?! Go cop the rest of these fantastic tracks!
Streetlab – 2009 Roundup
Packed with breaky goodness, slow jungle and 130ish Keysound kinda stuff – if you loved Hackney Parrot, you’ll love this. Featuring unreleased tracks from Wen and Parris (who destroyed at the Reconstrvct before last), Facta and Epoch (who are playing the next one and the one after that, respectively) and loads of Etch originals. This is my favorite strain of bass music right now and god bless Reconstrvct for bringing it to us when almost no one else is (but hey Luke, could you book Etch in year 3 pretty please???)
Tracklisting:
Etch & Parris – Different Angles
Etch – Sphynx
Facta – Zodiak
Etch – Solidified

HOUSE-O-MATIC: Contakt, Space Jam, C-Sick, Mayster & Ben Steidel (Lemonade) at Over The Eight [10PM/FREE]

BROKE CITY: The Range, D. Gookin (dj set), Sleepyhead, Figgy, Dunes at Bizarre Bushwick [10PM/FREE]
The Range is a super ridiculously dope footwork producer, who has released stuff on Donkey Pitch and Astro Nautico. Been killing it for a few years now. D.Gookin does weirdo pop singersongwriter ish, but will be spinning a DJ set – plus the residents here totally rule and it’s free.

Gatekeeper and SSION too – all three are unpredictable but thoroughly enjoyable – which is exactly what we love about Brooklyn’s psychadelic electronic scene right now.

Verboten pres Trouble & Bass vs Dirtybird: Kode9, Salva, Worthy, J.Phlip, DKDS, Drop the Lime, Star Eyes, Strange VIP, Tony Quattro at Sullivan Room [10PM/$20]
THIS. Probably the best lineup we’ve seen all summer. Dirtybird is doing more than anyone to keep stateside house music funky, vital and booty-tastic. J.Phlip (mix) and Worthy (mix) will be out from California repping them. The Trouble & Bass crew always kills it – they basically define ‘killing it’. Especially that young buck Tony Quattro – last T&B party, he and Dr. Jeep had the dancefloor WILIN before 11PM. And you know we love DKDS.
Oh, and a few other huge special guests like Salva (fresh off his BBC residency) and Kode9 (he runs this label Hyperdub, you mighta heard of it). Both are certified bass music geniuses. So that’s, uh, FOUR headliners, and the best damn support lineup in NYC. Check out our full feature on the event here for all the info, a buttload of mixes and set times (if we can get em).

This isn’t nice disco. No string arrangements or diva vocals here. Just driving basslines and extra crispy drums, perfect for dancing in dark rooms or driving all night.

DISCOVERY: Free Magic, Faso, and Chris Costello at Glasslands Gallery [11:30/FREE]

Their home venue, Glasslands, has just installed a big new soundsystem, which means Discovery doesn’t have to pay to bring in extra sound. And they’re passing the savings onto us. Really excited to hear the new sound there, as Glasslands will be hosting some acts that demand it later this summer (Phaeleh, Lil’ Silva and L-Vis 1990).

Local bassweight purveyors, SNGL, Rozi (who runs the Tuba label) and Subverse-NYC residents I.N.I. and Max Mischief complete the bill. Worth noting that there’s a late night b2b Neurofunk DnB sesh scheduled between Asylum and I.N.I. All this will be booming over the famous Tsunami Bass soundsystem with 4 labhorn subs, so get ready to FEEL it.

Trouble & Bass: SWINDLE (deep medi, UK), Starkey, DJ Slow, Star Eyes, Strange VIP at Steel Drums [10PM/$10]
Swindle is a hell of a musician. He takes purple dubstep and infuses it with a triple shot of jazz-funk synth lines, which he executes brilliantly with incredible keyboard chops. His first track, Do The Jazz, changed my fucking life when I heard his label-mates Silkie & Quest drop it at Cielo last year. I’ve still never heard anything like it, except for Swindle’s other productions. Swindle’s full length record comes out later this month – stream it here. Also headlining is the exceptionally talented ‘street bass’ producer Starkey, from Philly. He’s had an incredible run of sci-fi themed albums and EPs over the last few years (Orbits being one of my favorite albums of 2012). Finally, T&B crew Star Eyes and Strange VIP will be warming up, plus special guest DJ Slow, still in town from RBMA.

EPROM, Dubbel Dutch, Sleepyhead at Glasslands Gallery [11:30PM/$10]
Eprom has been mutating hip hop beats into delightfully monstrous bass music for 7 or 8 years now. A perfect example is his Kendrick remix, which has thoroughtly blown up in the last few weeks. His first LP, Metahuman, came out last year on Rwina Records, and earned wide praise for his glitched-out 808s and crunchy, low slung basslines. Personally, his Pipe Dream EP is still my favorite. It’s a shame that this is competing with the Starkey/Swindle show, as Starkey is actually a huge fan of Eprom’s; listen to him gush over some classic Eprom here (“you can’t play anything after this!”). Excellently chosen support acts, too – Dubbel Dutch always tears it down with his turbo-tropical club jams, and Broke City resident Sleepyhead is quite an accomplished bass music producer and DJ in his own right.

TOP PICK Gaslamp Killer, Edan (all vinyl DJ set), FaltyDL, Nick Hook, Krampfhaft at Music Hall of Williamsburg [9PM/$15]
GLK is an incredibly high energy performer, viciously mashing crunk hip hop beats, psychadelia, ecstatic middle eastern music and all manner off voodoo via turntables and live controllers. But the real star here is Krampfhaft, who is playing first at 9:30. It’s a special treat to see this guy, as he’s only in town as an RBMA participant before returning to Europe. His necksnapping, lazer-baked beats fuse wonky, juke, and 808 music into something that is clearly from the future. In fact, it was one of his tracks that got DJ shadow kicked off the decks in Miami for being “too future”. Check out his last three EPs – they just keep getting better. Quite frankly I’m terrified of what he’s gonna make next. Also on the bill is Edan doing an all vinyl hip hop DJ set, and NYC gems FaltyDL and Nick Hook.

RECONSTRVCT XIII Outlook Launch Party: Author (live), Cyrus, Seven, Jack Sparrow, Ruckspin, Joe Nice, True Nature, Selector Joseph Demension at tba [10PM/$30]
Words can’t describe what a huge deal this is, but I’ll try anyway. Reconstrvct is the best party in Brooklyn; 100% independent, underground and uncompromising. Their lineups are always massively stacked; this one is mountainous. They got the best renegade sound system in NYC (Tsunami Bass), recently upgraded to 40,000 watts of the warmest, cleanest bass I’ve ever heard. Add to that that this is the NYC/US launch party for Outlook, the world’s best bass music festival. People are coming hundreds of miles for this. TOP PICK LIT CITY RAVE: DJ Deeon, Traxman, Dubbel Dutch, J-Cush, Durban at The Rink [10PM/$12]
Lit City is back in NYC for the first time since New Years, and boy are they going hard. First off, it’s the NYC debut of DJ Deeon, who has been pushing Chicago’s ghetto house sounds since ‘94 – he’s one of the true originators and innovators. But they’re also bringing out Traxman, another Chicago footwork legend. His Da Mind of Traxman LP on Planet Mu last year was a shoe-in for year end lists, and a turning point in visibility for the sounds of chicago footwork. Also on the bill, Mixpak’s Dubbel Dutch, who knows a thing or two about makin motherfuckers dance at high tempos, and Lit City residents J-Cush and Durban. Back at 285 Kent – bring earplugs, it will get loud.

I’ve had the pleasure of catching Bonobo twice in the last year, and his DJ sets are energetic and danceable, infused with his uber-smooth jazz and trip hop sensibility, but still sounding totally current for a 2013 dancefloor.

MIXPAK: Jubilee (Release Party), Star Eyes, Burt Fox, Dubbel Dutch, Dre Skull, The Large at The Call Box [10PM/FREE]
Release Party for Jubilee’s single Pull Ova/1-95 single, out this week on Mixpak. It’s a slammin pair of Miami Bass tracks, already receiving play at Fabric, Boiler Room and many more fine outlets. Longtime collaborators Star Eyes (of Trouble&Bass) and Burt Fox guest. Star Eyes will no doubt bring some heavy bass (as Troublemakers are wont to do) and Burt Fox has promised a “super miami set” in tribute to Jubilee’s musical heritage. The rest of the Mixpak crew will be slinging their meanest riddims as well. The Call Box is kinda out there (around the corner from Steel Drums) but with Mixpak’s devoted following, no cover and such a well-liked guest of honor, this one is gonna pack out.
RINSED: Bareskin (Hypercolour – UK), Jamie Antonelli, Dan Wender, Blacky II at secret location tba [11PM-6AM/$10-25]
Rinsed is taking a gamble with this one, bringing out a pair of basically unknown producers to headline. But they’ve become such an institution over the last two years that I’m fairly certain that won’t hurt their turnout. Bareskin (cue Mary Anne Hobbs voice) is just 19 years old but has already played all over the UK and Europe. His tunes are the kind of magical UK club material that can make 3-4am last forever (unnecessary in this instance as Rinsed goes till 6). Syrupy garage house, chopped Rnb vocals, and some warehousey 303s – it’s kinda like Boddika by way of Jacques Greene.
Year of the Future: Honey Jaws, Dis Fig, KeekeeKud at Pianos [1-4AM/FREE]
A newer party devoted to exactly our kind of bass music – the flyer promises garage, footwork, grime, house, dubstep and more – check the promo mix. It’s a weird slot, 1-4am at Pianos, but that also makes for a nice focused party. Resident DJ Dis Fig aka Felichen is definitely a badgyal on the decks – I’ve been lurking her soundcloud quite a bit and every single one of her mixes is on point in terms of both mixing and selection. She seems equally at home with footwork, house/techno and uk bass and hip hop. This is also the DJ debut of Honey Jaws (on right at 1am), who you may recognize from the front fucking row of every good bass show we rep.

Mr Saturday Night at Glasslands [11:30PM/$20]
The friendliest house & techno party ever is trying on Glasslands for size while their normal venue is on hiatus. They’ll be bringing in their own soundsystem and transforming the space to make things suitably special. This one is also sold out, but there will be some tickets at the door. Mr. Saturday has a very devoted following and there’s not a ton going on in terms of house/techno this night, so if you do want to get a ticket you had better outside at 11:15.
Break Science, Paul Basic at Bowery Ballroom [9PM/$15]
Brooklyn-based duo Break Science make some excellent, semi-ragey glitch hop and dubstep. It’s obviously aimed at the Bisco set (especially given their latest release being on Pretty Lights Music) but this also satisfies my craving for Glitch Mob-style west coast turrbocrunk. They’ve been touring their live set heavily for years, so you can expect a pretty tight show.

From his early days as a junglist, producing genre-defining tunes like “super sharp shooter”, to recent hits with A-Trak and Miss Dynamite, he’s is still smashing it up worldwide. LOW: Matt Shadetek, Nate Mars, Lusta, Tyeze at Happy Ending [10PM/FREE]
A great choice if you’re looking for something a little more intimate and unexpected. Shadetek has been rolling with the Dutty Artz crew for years, making all manner of global bass – that’s horribly oversimplifying the man’s talents, but they’re broad. Nate Mars is a dubspot affiliate, with excellent production chops ranging from dubstep to digital cumbia. Lusta takes a grab-bag approach to bass, but keeps it dark and driving, while Tyeze seems to have more of a wompy west-coast take on the low end.

SATURDAY, MARCH 2
CAPRICORN: Tim Sweeney, Mike Simonetti, Dust at Bossa Nova Social Club [10PM/FREE]
Tim Sweeney’s long-running Beats In Space radio show has always been a source of phenomenal music, both new and old, as well as host to an incredible spectrum of guests. Apparently his live sets are pretty phenomenal too. Mike Simonetti has also been killing dancefloors for decades with an adventurous mix of italo, house, and disco. Plus Bossa Nova Social Club is one of the best new spots – far enough out to keep the crowd dedicated, but also boasting a gorgeous custom soundsystem and plenty of space to dance.

Built By MeanRed: Daedalus, Salva, Samo Soundboy, Ryan Hemsworth at LPR [11PM/$15]
MeanRed once again has brought together a massive lineup of sonic experimentalists. Daedalus is still one of the most creative DJs I’ve heard in ages (beach boys over hard house? balkan brass over techno? and it works!) and has a really unique and compelling lighting rig. Salva has experienced meteoric success this year, between a slot on the BBC and his trap edit of Mercy. But he has been making killer 808 beats for years before it became trendy (check his 2011 release, Complex Housing). Samo Soundboy will be bringing the heavy bass, and Ryan Hemsworth has been killing the future-rnb thing lately.

SKATALITES, Subatomic Sound System, Van Gordon Martin Band at Brooklyn Bowl [8PM/$10]
Without dub, there’d be no dance music as we know it. The Skatalites are a LEGENDARY dub outfit, more or less inventing the sound of rocksteady/first wave ska. Officially forming in Kingston Jamaica in 1964, the original members had been jamming together since the mid-50s. While the cast has switched up a bit, the soul and history is still there. Support from Brooklyn’s finest dubwise electronic label, Subatomic Sound System, is a natural fit.

I’m not going to attempt to describe GHE20GOTH1K – plenty have already attempted – if the name doesn’t evoke anything interesting for you, chances are you’re going to be too closed minded to enjoy it anyway. But if you’re intrigued by what it could all mean, check out some of their mixtapes.
