FRIDAY, MAY 10

FORM & SUBSTANCE: Projection Mapping in Contemporary Art, music by Archie Pelago, Braille, Nooka Jones, more at Gowanus Ballroom [10PM/$10]
Projection Mapping has had a profound impact on dance music visuals in the last few years. Amon Tobin’s ISAM was many people’s first exposure to it, but there are hundreds of other practitioners of this nascent art form. Form + Substance is an art show happening this weekend, featuring 19 such artists with 26 projection-mapped works on display. The event takes place in the Gowanus Ballroom, a massive alternative art space. Curated by Percussion Lab founder Brian Blessinger (amongst others), the event will also feature music from PercLab resident DJs Nooka Jones and Praveen Sharma, plus a live set from your favorite cello/DJ/sax trio, Archie Pelago. If you’re ready for the next next level visual shit, this is the place to be.

PBR Streetgang, Mateo, Evan Michael, Judge Wise, T’Angelo at Cameo Gallery [12AM/$10]
PBR Streetgang are the funkiest. Seriously, listen to this cut right now, and try not to shit when the Missy vocal comes in. A DJ and production duo from the UK, they frequently get labelled as house, or nu-disco. And while they certainly encompass those sounds, and embrace them in their DJ sets, it’s their funk which distinguishes them productions from a sea of meh competitors. Show starts at midnight, so they’ll probably go on around 2.

RBMA x DARK DISCO: Metro Area, Bok Bok b2b L-Vis 1990, Gerd Janson at 88 Palace [$15/11PM]
Mean Red’s Dark Disco. With a lil help from RBMA, Mean Red has brought out 3 headlining acts for Dark Disco. Top billin is a a live set from Metro Area, the first performance in 10 years from house/disco duo of Morgan Geist and Darshan Jesrani. Gerd Janson is headliner #2, also a house/disco dude from Berlin, where he was a resident at Panorama Bar, so that’s insta-cred for all you rave snobs out there. It’s deserved; check his recent BR set, some serious funk and soul in his house. But what really puts this over the top is a b2b set from Bok Bok and L-Vis 1990, founding members of Night Slugs. Their grimey approach to raw techno and jackin house helped bring about a revitalization in UK dance music in the post dubstep diaspora in 2009. Both are certified ace djs, and they help run one of the most exciting labels out there; that means a blistering set full of shit you won’t hear anywhere else for another 6 months.

Drop Electric, The Mast, Psychic Twin at Knitting Factory [8PM/$7]
Three vocal-centric live electronic acts play an early show at the Knit. Mostly we’re listing this cuz The Mast is playing, an absurdly talented live electronic duo of vocalist Haale and percussionist/producer Matt Kilmer. Haale has a voice unlike anything I’ve ever heard – phenomenally powerful, nuanced, and hypnotic quality that pairs so well with Matt’s gorgeous, deft beats (both sequenced and live). Reminiscent of the Knife, Massive Attack or Bjork, while maintaining their own distinct, moody groove.

Lit City x Fade To Mind: Mystery Guest Headliners, RP BOO (NYC debut), Tink (live PA), Total Freedom, J-Cush, Durban, TCJ at 285 Kent [10PM/$10]
The mystery is over… top billed headliner is the new ghetto bass triforce of Total Freedom, Nguzunguzu and Kingdom, calling themselves THE CLAW, they will have a special 3 hour set featuring vocalist Kelela. However, we’re most excited about RP Boo, whose aggressive, innovative sampling style was instrumental in transforming late 90s ghetto house into what we now know as footwork and juke. His first LP, appropriately titled Legacy! is dropping in 3 days on Planet Mu. Also on is a live PA from up-n-coming Chi-town R&B star, Tink.
Set times:
9-11 Lit City Residents – TCJ, DURBAN and J-CUSH
11-2 THE CLAW (NGUZUNGUZU, TOTAL FREEDOM & KINGDOM) ft KELELA

FIXED: Duke Dumont plus JDH & Dave P at Le Poisson Rouge [11PM/$10]
Duke Dumont is blowin up right now – he’s one of the only dance artists in recent memory to have a #1 hit on the UK charts, with the unstoppably catchy Need You (100%). But its not that surprising; Dumont initially made his name pounding out legitimately banging club remixes of pop tunes (exhibit A: his 2006 Missy remix), so he knows a thing or two about catchy vocal hooks. Initially working within a more fidget/electro style, Dumont has capitalized on the current house insanity in the UK. Duke Dumont goes on at 1AM, while residents JDH & Dave P, just back from playing Coachella, open and close the night.

DISCOVERY: Detroit Swindle, Dirt Crew, Free Magic & Faso at Glasslands [11:30/$10]
Discovery is bringing out Detroit Swindle, a house music duo from Berlin who have been quietly blowing up across the pond. Channeling a lifelong love of motown and soul through their drum machines, their productions keep things on more restrained, deep house tip, But their live sets will get you loose as hell. Also on the bill is Dirt Crew label boss Break 3000. Discovery Party residents Free Magic + Faso will be warming things up, and Glasslands will be looking and sounding better than ever. Not only are they bringing in serious sound reinforcement, but the new programmable lighting installation (that has replaced the cloud) will be in full effect.
