BPMLWRLVL: Ryan Hemsworth, Chrissy Murderbot, CJ Milli, That Work, Nire, Emel, Jason Scott at Tribeca Grand [10PM/$10-15]
Big ups to whoever is booking these parties; bring em in with a big name like Ryan Hemsworth and then blow their fucking minds with juke/footwork from Chicago producer Chrissy Murderbot (aka the Carl Linnaeus of Club Music). A solid cohort of residents (including RBMA alum Nire) will play across the spectrum of bass music.
Braille, Max Pearl, Volvox, John Barera at Bossa Nova Civic Club [10PM/FREE]
House and techno in a low key setting from a cast of really interesting selectors. Braille is half of Sepalcure but also a resident at Percussion Lab. Max Pearl is editor of Cluster Mag, John Barera runs Supply Records. Don’t really know what Volvox’s deal is but the name tends to show up in the more psychedelic company so I’m guessing he or she isn’t boring.

LIT CITY RAVE: Oneman (UK), Brenmar, Brass Fergie, Durban, J-Cush at Public Assembly Loft [10PM/$10]
Whereas most headliners become famous based on a few hit tunes, Oneman has become a household name in UK bass music solely on the strength of his DJing. Not only is his mixing “techno-tight” but his selections are always a paragon of what is relevant in contemporary dance music. Support from a familiar and talented cast of Lit City fam and allies.

TOP PICK LIT CITY RAVE: DJ Deeon, Traxman, Dubbel Dutch, J-Cush, Durban at The Rink [10PM/$12]
Lit City is back in NYC for the first time since New Years, and boy are they going hard. First off, it’s the NYC debut of DJ Deeon, who has been pushing Chicago’s ghetto house sounds since ‘94 – he’s one of the true originators and innovators. But they’re also bringing out Traxman, another Chicago footwork legend. His Da Mind of Traxman LP on Planet Mu last year was a shoe-in for year end lists, and a turning point in visibility for the sounds of chicago footwork. Also on the bill, Mixpak’s Dubbel Dutch, who knows a thing or two about makin motherfuckers dance at high tempos, and Lit City residents J-Cush and Durban. Back at 285 Kent – bring earplugs, it will get loud.

Egyptrixxx, Evan Michael, T’Angelo, Judge Wise at Cameo Gallery [12AM/$7]
Toronto’s Egyptrixxx is back in NYC, with his “celestial club music”. Pulling from techno, drone and even pop motifs, Egyptrixxx obliterates your expectations of what can be done with a 4×4 format. Expect an extremely danceable set full of unexpected textures, tension and a complete lack of trendy bullshit.

BONOBO, Nickodemus, Wiseacre at Public Assembly [12AM/$10]
The demigod of downtempo, Bonobo, is playing 2 shows tonight in support of his new LP, The North Borders. The first, at Webster Hall, is totally sold out, but he has a late DJ set at Public Assembly with limited tickets available at the door. I’ve had the pleasure of catching Bonobo twice in the last year, and his DJ sets are energetic and danceable, infused with his uber-smooth jazz and trip hop sensibility, but still sounding totally current for a 2013 dancefloor.

Kind of a low-key weekend, by New York City standards, but holy crap did we add a lot of events for April and May. Spring is most definitely in the air – can you feel it???
GHE20G0TH1K: Venus X, $hayne, Mike Q, Jubilee, Rizzla, more at Santos Party House [10PM/$15]
Everyone’s favorite impossible to describe party takes over both floors of Santos. Always a top pick, but the special guests tonight really put this one over the top: Ballroom diety Mike Q, tropical bass and grime expert Jubilee, and certified badman / hyperriddim specialist Rizzla. Get there early if you’re going, because the line will probably be around the block. Presales are available online right up until the party.

FREETECH: M.E.S.H., Physical Therapy, Gobby, New_York_City at 45 Mott St [10PM/?]
Dark Techno in a moderately sketchy chinatown basement karaoke spot – could be just what you’re looking for. Not a lot of info on this one but everyone on the lineup is seriously talented and weird.

The Dog & Pony Show + TURRBOTAX® Present: Rolando (Osgut Ton) plus Paul Raffaele, Contakt at Output [10PM/$20]
Detroit’s Latin house legend Rolando takes over Output, bringing to bear almost two decades of innovative releases on legendary labels like Osgut Ton and Underground Resistance. With supporting DJs (and hopefully the excellent crowds as well!) from two of our favorite parties, Turrbotax and Dog & Pony Show.

PLANT MUSIC PRESENTS: Ben Mono, Soul 2 Seoul, Gavin Walker at Cameo Gallery [12AM/$10]
Ben Mono is everywhere, stylistically. His latest EP on Plant Music is a joyful take on funky, muscular house, but I’ve heard productions by him that have slayed as electro-soul, disco house, and his latest mixes are more UK Bass oriented. While a cynic could cry bandwagon, the reality is some producers just thrive on variety; and Ben Mono excels at it.

HUSH: DJ Eko, Jerry Jones at The Flat [10PM/FREE]
DJ Eko has a unique sound – she calls it Soultronica (peep the mixes) – and it’s basically the sexiest music you’ve ever heard. Or as the flyer says, “where future bass and future soul make out”. You’d be forgiven for thinking she’s just updating the lovestep formula, but Eko has been honing her sound for over a decade. Also spinning, Jerry Jones from East Village Radio.

Tonight our top recommendation has to be Percussion Lab – they’re throwing a party for their first compilation, Cambio. The lineup is some of our favorite NYC talent including Braille (Praveeen of Sepalcure), Contakt (Turrbotax) and our favorite 3 piece, Archie Pelago (check their feature in XLR8R yesterday!). UK label Night Slugs is throwing their first warehouse rave in NYC, with founding members Bok Bok, Girl Unit and L-Vis 1990 plus their NYC associate, Kingdom. Advance tickets are sold out but get there at 11 for the limited door – this one will pack out and go very late.
Also tonight is GHE20 GOTH1K, the famously genre-melting party where you will hear them “play Al-Jezeera in the club, and you will like it”. Venus X and $hayne plus ballroom master MikeQ and Rizzla, whose relentless riddims will make you sweat. All black or white dress preferred. Finally if you want breaks, look no further than Vitamin B vs No Parking on the Dancefloor – this is the third annual combo party these guys have thrown, so you can expect shenanigans and nonstop booty-movin. If yr still moving after 4am, head to 440 Irving for Afters with Musa (but we didn’t tell you).
And that’s just tonight! SATURDAY, dnb heads are in for a treat with the legends AK-1200 and Gridlock at SRB. Discovery Party is always a good time, and they have detroit legend Mike Huckaby at Glasslands. Lots of funky house, boogie and disco. And over at 285 Kent, Sweater Beats, Branchez, Slava and Jaw Jam will be playing some slowed, sexy, eclectic, futuristic r&b-influenced productions.
But hold your horses, because I hear there’s a MASSIVE Trouble & Bass vs. Mixpak warehouse rave happening at 1040 Metropolitan Saturday, going very very late. The lineup will be dropping in the next 24 hours but you can trust that it’s a doozy, featuring allstars from both crews.
