WompList 47: Reconstrvct/Outlook Launch, Mosca, Krampfhaft/Gaslamp Killer, XXXY, Chaisley Lussier, A Tribe Called Red, Ray Keith

FRIDAY, MAY 31

TOP PICK  Gaslamp Killer, Edan (all vinyl DJ set), FaltyDL, Nick Hook, Krampfhaft at Music Hall of Williamsburg [9PM/$15]
GLK is an incredibly high energy performer, viciously mashing crunk hip hop beats, psychadelia, ecstatic middle eastern music and all manner off voodoo via turntables and live controllers. But the real star here is Krampfhaft, who is playing first at 9:30. It’s a special treat to see this guy, as he’s only in town as an RBMA participant before returning to Europe. His necksnapping, lazer-baked beats fuse wonky, juke, and 808 music into something that is clearly from the future. In fact, it was one of his tracks that got DJ shadow kicked off the decks in Miami for being “too future”. Check out his last three EPs – they just keep getting better. Quite frankly I’m terrified of what he’s gonna make next. Also on the bill is Edan doing an all vinyl hip hop DJ set, and NYC gems FaltyDL and Nick Hook.

GOOD LOOKS NY: Chaisley Lussier, Bass Control, Narkatta, at Lilium (Funktion-1 Sound) [10PM/FREEwRSVP]
Lilium is a club in the W hotel. Yes, there’s bottle service, but more importantly, there are good DJs. Chaisley Lussier has impeccable taste in UK bass, Narkatta plays glitch-hop, and Bass Control is electro/progressive house. 2 outta 3 aint bad! Could be a good choice if you have friends that you can never convince to come to BK.

SATURDAY, JUNE 1

RECONSTRVCT XIII Outlook Launch Party: Author (live), Cyrus, Seven, Jack Sparrow, Ruckspin, Joe Nice, True Nature, Selector Joseph Demension at tba [10PM/$30]
Words can’t describe what a huge deal this is, but I’ll try anyway. Reconstrvct is the best party in Brooklyn; 100% independent, underground and uncompromising. Their lineups are always massively stacked; this one is mountainous. They got the best renegade sound system in NYC (Tsunami Bass), recently upgraded to 40,000 watts of the warmest, cleanest bass I’ve ever heard. Add to that that this is the NYC/US launch party for Outlook, the world’s best bass music festival. People are coming hundreds of miles for this. If you really want to get an understanding, read my previous writeups of the headliners Author, and of Outlook Festival, or check out the featured event page, loaded with mixes and tunes from the stellar lineup.

A Tribe Called Red, Zuzuka Ponderosa, Jubilee at Glasslands [11:30PM/$12]
A Tribe Called Red is a trio that blends native american music with club music and hip hop to great effect. One of the most interesting live electronic acts I’ve heard about in a minute. Joining them is ridiculously energetic funk carioca emcee, Zuzuka Ponderosa, and the hardest working DJ in BK, Jubilee.

Weekend Womp Forecast!

Tonight there’s truly something for everyone. Our pick is Addison Groove at Cameo Gallery – this guy is always on the bleeding edge of bass music (and is now running a new label, LIT). As Headhunter he was my gateway to deep dubstep, and it’s incalculable how many people who got turned on to juke/footwork by his immortal tune Footcrab. Every time I see him play, he turns my brain inside out. With support from FaltyDL (whose new LP on Ninjatune is SO GOOD) and SciFi&Fantasy label head Max Pearl

If you like Breaks, then the only place to be tonight is House of Yes for VITAMIN B. They have finally booked Deekline, who is about as legendary as they come for a genre. Plus the residents Barney Iller, Tektite and Tim The Enchanter are all veteran badasses – this one is for serious dancers only (but they are opening up a second chillout room due to the huge expected turnout). Hit up ELECTRIC PUNANNY at the Paper Box tonight for a frenetic mix of dancehall, hip hop and all kinds of global bass – they’re celebrating the third installment of the mixtape series of the same name, and have OG producers Dubbel Dutch and Dre Skull.

VERBOTEN has tINI and Justin Martin at HIghline Ballroom tonight. There are a lot of Justins in house music, but none whose tunes are as funky and ubiquitous as his recent LP on Dirtybird, Ghettos and Gardens (and the two volumes of remixes it inspired). Expensive, but highline is a very nice venue and the crowd is gonna be mad hyped. Finally, if you’re looking for a weirder DIY vibe, hit up AstroNautico – they have  an interesting spectrum of house music tonight from guests Braille (Praveen from Sepalcure) and some live hardware from Octa Octo. Plus the massive Tsunami Bass soundsystem (the one that powers Reconstrvct) and some very talented residents, all for just $8 with RSVP. And the space is really one of a kind (it’s a rave parking garage – no, really)

SATURDAY also has great options – the most interesting of which is definitely IDLE, put together by the Reconstrvct crew and BigUP magazine. It’s an art show featuring the work of Ashes57 (who did so much of the dope art for Outlook Festival) as well as a lineup of exceptionally talented experimental electronic music. No tickets at the door tho, so be sure to get one in advance if you want to go (secret BK location will also be annouced only to ticketholders day of). Over at Le Bain, our boys DKDS are headlining Night People – expect some serious dancefloor-oriented techno and house. Also, you may know two out of the three residents (Lloydski and Eli) from Bushwick’s finest dance party, Tiki Disco. Trust us when we say you’ll be in good hands.  And for all you 90s ravers, DnB legend Photek is in the Webster Hall basement on saturday, while NinjaTune  veteran DJ Vadim will be at Brooklyn Bowl for just eight bucks.

Also don’t neglect to check out all the new additions for February and March!  We’ll be blessed to enjoy two more Reconstrvcts, the return of Bicep, Kyle Hall,  Egyptrixx, Chrissy Murderbot, an Osgut Ton showcase at Output, a Dirtybird showcase at SRB, Turrbotax with Gerry Read and SO MUCH MORE.

Want more info about any of these? Everything mentioned here is on the events page, and sign up for the WompList to get the updated calendar in your email every friday! Signup is at the very top of this page.

See you on the floor!

XI frite nite podcast 17

Frite Nite Podcast 17 – XI

XI turns in a huge mix for the Frite Nite podcast. Herein lies everything I love about the increasingly nebulous genre known as future bass. The reason for this nebulous-ness to be ever increasing is partly because it’s a term that is mostly defined by what it is not (dubstep, house or techno) but also because

Essential Partying: Turrbotax UK invasion, CASSETTENYC, Roni Size @ Love, MAH Mahnday

THURSDAY 5/6:

METROPOLIS at Love ft. RONI SIZE
Roni Size is pretty much the godfather of Drum n Bass. If you’re reading this blog, you’ve heard his shit. Go see him rip it up on Love’s uber soundsystem with the whole Bass Fueled Mischief crew – Hellfire Machina (who have been absolutely crushing it with their Headspace parties), Code of Arms, Odi and Morphous – holding it down.

Git yr tix here. This is TONIGHT!!!!

FRIDAY 5/7:

TURRBOTAX: BUSINESS EDITION at The Cove ft. HOT CITY, SUBMERSE, DJ DOM
Hot City, whose tracks have been a staple at every Turrbotax, is fittingly making his US debut there! He just dropped a mix on the prestigious XLR8R podcast. Also on the bill from the UK is Submerse, who just had his mix featured on BigUp magazine’s podcast! What a bunch of tastemakers and trendsetters!
If you haven’t been, Turrbotax is a monthly at the Cove, formerly Hugs, a loveably trashy bar  with a weird curved ceiling off the Bedford L stop. The resident DJs all fucking kick ass – Mayster in particular always knocks my socks off and I run into Steph Neptune/Video City at every good party.

CATURDAY 5/8:

CASSETTENYC at the Paul Robeson Theatre
Cassette is a uniquely awesome party. Pseudo-monthly, and held at a different unsexy Brooklyn venue each time, the residents include big names like Machine Drum,  Lando Kal (of LazerSword), Eliot Lipp and Praveen (who isn’t a big name afaik but deserves his props cuz he holds it down with the crew).

This time around, they have the very savvy addition of Mike Slott and FaltyDL –   who’ve both put out music on such uberhip labels as Planet Mu, Ramp and Hotflush.

What makes Cassette really awesome, though, is how all the DJs tag team, song after song. There’s usually 2 tables with 3 or 4 DJs with laptops and a gaggle of midi controllers and cables – from this techy stew arises a relentlessly danceable mash of original productions, exclusive shit, big tchunes and throwback jamz. Bring your outta-town friends, and tell them you’re takin em to the coolest party in Brooklyn – because you are.

SUNDAY 5/9

Shakey’s Record Fair at Public Assembly
Take a day off from partying and wobble, and go check out this record fair and party. 7PM to 2AM, so you 9-5ers can come too!

They wrote it up pretty damn good over at the Dubspot Blog, so I’m just gonna quote them:
Dubspot friend, veteran NYC DJ, and founder of theWarper PartyJulie Covello, aka DJ Shakey, is hosting one of her renowned record fairs on May 9th.  Be sure to stop by, roll up your sleeves, and dig through some dog-eared gems, just like those hero’s of yours did before all this DVS digital-DJing craziness.

Julie carefully selects dealers for her fair through a network of vinyl devotes she has met through years of experience in the music industry – it is guaranteed that you will find great selections, fair prices, and avoid sifting through loads of bad LPs that somebody bought at your grandmother’s yard sale.

MONDAY 5/10:

First lady of Bass on a Funktion 1 system? Jesus christ on a bicycle, this one is a fucking no-brainer before I even mention that it’s FREE and there’s a FREE OPEN BAR. And the legendary astral-traveler Francois K will be on decks as well, as it is Deep Space.
