Mix Roundup: The Killabits, DJ Vilify, DJ MorNYC, Flatline, Author

SUPER premium selection of mixes this week – lots of deep, dubby, filthy goodness. Starting with the most roughneck, and ending with the most chill, here are the best mixes from the last few weeks.

Whenever I see the THE KILLABITS, I get excited (because of THIS FUCKIN TUNE). They absolutely slaughtered their session for J’aime Le Dubstep. What I love about the Killabits is that no matter how aggro they get, they never lose their sense of musicality or tune. Apparently they helped start a long-running weekly in Toronto with Zed’s Dead, called Bassmentality. Fuckin A, I love it when you find out awesome people are related. Next, DJ Vilify, from Montreal. Whenever Passion of the Weiss devotes a whole post to rap about a dubstep mix, you better believe there’s more than just bangers thrown into it. Like Sach O says in a way more elegant fashion, there’s a ton of utterly amazing tracks in here that you can’t believe you haven’t heard – at least I couldn’t. Like Zed’s Dead sampling “Say A Little Prayer” to infintely fantastic effect. And Bosh’s “Use The Force” edit of Sweet Shop… if there are two things that are overdone in this world, it’s Sweet Shop and electronic music version of the Star Wars theme. Yet together, they’re sublime. There’s a whole bunch more rad shit in there, a lot of creatively dropped gangsta rap, and a whole bunch of chioce riddims… go see for yourself!

DJ MorNYC deserves special recognition for being the first to put the dub in dubstep for me. His mixes always have a strong roots-reggae influence. Perhaps better than anyone, he shows the connection between Jamaican dancehall and NYC’s Webster Hall. Though the bulk of this mix heads well into brostep territory, it’s masterfully constructed, and you can find the thread of soundsystem culture woven throughout. Flatline continues the duppy vibes with a mix that was so finger lickin good that the first time I heard it, I listened to it twice in a row, all the way through. It starts with a stunning minmal dub edit of Amy Winehouse (which really shouldn’t be a surprise, given what Flatline’s can do with vocals – he’s still the only one to ever do a decent dubstep remix of Glory Box) and keeps the heat on, blazing through significantly smooth and irie selection of tunes from DZ, Marcus Visionary, VIVEK, DJ Madd and Radikal Guru.

Finally, a mix for Mary Anne Hobb’s XFM joint by Author, who I was delighted to find is a collaboration between Jack Sparrow and Ruckspin, two of the best contemporary producers of deep, dark, uberchill dubstep. Ruckspin is also the chief knob-twiddler for Submotion Orchestra (which is why Sunshine sounds so familiar).  It’s almost like a dream-team engineered to challenge Phaeleh as the King of Chill. Anyway, this mix certifiable grade-A bedtime-step – enjoy!
