Mix Roundup: Tinker, TOKiMONSTA and Miss Zora Jones

tokimonsta killing it in NYC

Welcome to the weekend, Wompers! This marks the first time I’ve done a second mix roundup in one week, but when there are this many quality jamz, you gotta go the extra mile. All three of the mixes featured in this post were done by incredibly talented DJs, all of whom happen to be female. I didn’t set out to write a “GIRLS ONLY” edition (tokenism is almost as lame as male supremacy in the first place), it just so happened that the last 3 truly quality mixes I heard were all by DJs with the double-X chromosome styles. Onward!

Tinker is a name you should get to know. Reppin the False Profit camp is a good way to get my attention, and doing a BigUp podcast is another. Honestly, I would have fallen in love with this mix based on the tracklist alone – there are more names I trust here than in my phone’s favorites.  In particular, it’s nice to see the skronky Northern European beatmakers represented – a lot of Lowriderz Collective and Project Mooncircle affiliates along with the unimpeachable names like Planet Mu and Modeselektor’s Monkeytown. And that fuckin Mux Mool remix! Ughhhh why are the best tracks always the shortest?! But more importantly, the tunes blend together with artistry and create a truly  intergalactictechnicoloradventure vibe. And if you like that, she’s got a whole soundcloudfull of wonky spacecrunk mixes! Fuck yeah!

Next up, Zora Jones mixes episode #57 of Concepto Radio’s podcast. Concepto is a spanish music blog covering everything from techno, and dubstep to jazz, rare groove and soul. Their guest selectors for their podcasts are consistently ahead of the curve, eschewing trendyness and bangers for those with a real depth and attention to detail – not that those are mutually exclusive, as Zora Jones proves! She brings a stellar selection of recent cuts from blogosphere-approved producers (HudMo, Girl Unit, Rustie) and also manages to mix in some Luger-esque hip hop beats without making me want to smack somebody. It’s a tasty melange of heavy bass, skittering drums, pitched up vocals and retro-synths; kinda like if Girl Unit’s Wut were stretched out to a full hour. A great weekend warm-up mix, this is trap music on acid, and I like it.[soundcloud url=”http://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/26527474″]

Finally, a very special treat in the form of a TOKiMONSTA live mix. I’ve had the pleasure of seeing ToKi live a few times in the last year, and I can tell you she never disappoints. Like she says at the outset, ” I represent a crew called Brainfeeder…I’m here to play some weird shit for you guys!”, and she delivers. Seamlessly mixing originals and classics that are as tasty and fun as they are spacey and unexpected, ToKi keeps the vibe rolling and morphing but still totally cohesive. Like any true DJ, Toki manages to flip every track and make it truly her own. Psychadelic neon boom-bap at it’s finest. Toki’s mix starts at 59:00 (but the rest of it is worth a listen too!).[soundcloud url=”http://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/28219124″]
