Distal, Owen Howells, Dave Q, Nooka Jones at Cameo Gallery [12AM/$7]
Distal is a fantastically talented producer out of Atlanta. Constantly pushing genre boundaries with his own work, and with the output of his label, Embassy, he’s come to embody “bass music” for me. Owen Howells is also producer and label owner from the UK, specializing in house and techno. Check his feature mix for percussion lab, who are also providing Nooka Jones as support. The addition of Dave Q, founder of Dub War and relentless advocate of futuristic bass music, makes this show an incredible deal for less than $10.

GET NAKED: Beto Cravioto plus Andy Pry, Keith Edward at 594 Union [10PM/FREE]
Beto Cravioto is a resident of the Kaviar Disco Club parties. He’s been getting a lot of  bookings lately thanks to his well-received release on Plant Music, and solid abilities selecting disco and deep house. Keith Edward and Andy Pry are both fucking awesome DJs. Keith is also a beatmaker (you might have heard his recent work on Stones Throw) and vinyl purist, with incredibly deep crates of disco, house, funk and soul records. His mixing is as tight as it gets. Andy Pry is one of three residents of the wildly successful Tiki Disco party. Their mix of everything from tech house to nu disco to classic hip hop has become synonymous with summertime in Brooklyn. With any luck, this party might too.

BROKE CITY: Body Language (dj set), BFG, Michael Jukeson, plus Sleepyhead, Figgy, Dunes at Bizarre Bushwick [9:30PM/FREE]
Body Language blew up from the Brooklyn DIY scene with many tentacles of awesomeness; their better-than-the-original indie pop remixes have gained them a wide net of supporters, while their output as a band making indie-ish feelgood slow disco has also been incredibly solid. They’ll be DJing house, techno and disco and also debuting a live side featuring members of the band. Astro Nautico resident Michael Jukeson also guest DJs, reciprocating when the Broke City residents took over Astro in April. And as always, the Broke City residents Sleepyhead, Figgy and Dunes are all stupid talented producers in their own right, making this party an absurd deal at free.ninetynine.

SATURDAY, MAY 18

Juan Atkins, Contakt at Cameo Gallery [12AM/$17-20]
Techno is one of the few genres whose origin can be acurately traced to a specific time, place and group of 3 friends. Juan Atkins is part of that Holy Trinity, and that’s as far as this metaphor is gonna go. If you crave raw, unadulterated Detroit techno, then there’s nothin better. Opening up is Turrbotax founder Contakt, who also grew up in Detroit, playing techno.

MIDNIGHT ZERO: ZOMBIE NATION, L-VIS 1990, Dubbel Dutch, Physical Therapy at Steel Drums [11PM/$10]
Steel Drums, the north Brookyln warehouse venue, has apparently gotten a makeover, and tonight are hosting a massive lineup. Just today they announced the surprise headliner ZOMBIE NATION, of Kernkraft 400 fame. Since his breakout hit in 99, he’s stayed busy, and true to his dark, saturated sound. Hopefully he’s playing one of his famed MPC live sets. Founding Night Slug L-Vis 1990 would have been headliner enough. Joining him is Mixpak boss Dubbel Dutch, who always brings the house down with manic, crunked-out tropical bass, and local techno DJ Physical Therapy.

Everyones’ favorite holiday brings a variety of mind-expanding shows. Easy Star Allstars dub out the BK Bowl tonight, while Mike Servito and Nooka Jones throw down top-shelf house and techno at Cameo. Saturday, Turntable Lab has huge lineup of killer in-store performances all day in honor of Record Store Day. Amon Tobin is gonna take some heads off at LPR, while DJ Ripley cools out Bushwick and Dave Q presents experimental film + electronic music pairings at Indie Screen. Monday there’s VIVEK at Deep Space; system sound for system people indeed. And Wednesday, catch Turrbotax resident Space Jamz kicking off the inaugural Lunch Beat NYC in the flatiron.

Quick note that  I’m changing up the titling a bit this week, so that these blog posts more closely match the email blasts, since they’re almost the exact same content. Also, Weekend Womp Forecast was a terrible name.  Onward!

Easy Star Allstars, John Brown’s Body at Brooklyn Bowl [8PM/$15]
The Easy Star Allstars have made a name for themselves doing next-level dub covers of classic albums. They’ve remade Dark Side of The Moon, Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band, and Radiohead’s OK Computer – all pretty stoney albums to begin with – to be even more irie than the originals. Which is no small feat. But the real accomplishment here is that these don’t sound like covers at all; more like the same album from an alternate dimension.The Allstars are comprised of top-notch session players and produced by the deft hand of Ticklah, aka Victor Axelrod (who is also a founding member of The Dap-Kings and Antibalas).

Mike Servito, Nooka Jones, Air Zaire at Cameo Gallery [12AM/$12]
Mike Servito and Nooka Jones are two of the best resident DJs in NYC for house and techno. While Mike is the definitive old guard, with nearly 20 years behind the decks (the last 10 as a resident for The Bunker, NYC’s seminal techno party), Nooka is the new-school poster boy. Initially coming up as an intern for Percussion Lab a few years back, Nooka has quickly shed the young-gun descriptors to become known primarily for his stellar mixing and diverse selections. If you’re looking for trendy shit, look elsewhere.

TUNNEL VISION: Raz Mesinai, Ikue Mori, Howse, David Linton at IndieScreen [9:30/$10wRSVP]
A unique event put together by Dub War founder Dave Q, exploring the intersection of experimental film and bass music, at the Indie Screen cinema (next to Glasslands). Tunnel Vision will feature a variety of shorts as well as 4 longer works will be shown on the main screen, with live electronic scores performed on the exquisite Tsunami Bass Soundsystem. Definitely not your standard club night.

Amon Tobin (DJ Set) at Le Poisson Rouge [11PM/$20]
While Amon Tobin has been turning heads of the last 2 years with his phenomenal ISAM a/v show, his DJ sets are pretty mind-blowing in their own right, as his 2003 live album will attest. His dynamic sets are furious mix of classics from his extensive discography, deep cuts of weirdo drum-n-bass, and smattering of contemporary heavyness. I’ve seen him several times and can say with confidence that his sets never disappoint.

COOL OUT: DJ Ripley (all-vinyl dancehall set), Max Pearl, Regent Street, Oliver Rivard at Bushwick Kitchen [11PM/FREE]
A rocksteady, ska and dubwise party, featuring an all-vinyl set from DJ Ripley. Can’t say enough good things about Ripley. Not only is she an absurdly talented DJ (check the mixes. seriously.) and a freshly minted member of Dutty Artz, she’s also a righteous legal scholar, educator and activist. Her twitter and blog are must-reads if you ever think about the intersections of gender, race and class as they pertain to the dancefloor. And if you don’t, WAKE THE FUCK UP! Shit matters.

FRIDAY, APRIL 12

TOP PICK  LIT CITY RAVE: DJ Deeon, Traxman, Dubbel Dutch, J-Cush, Durban at The Rink [10PM/$12]
Lit City is back in NYC for the first time since New Years, and boy are they going hard. First off, it’s the NYC debut of DJ Deeon, who has been pushing Chicago’s ghetto house sounds since ‘94 – he’s one of the true originators and innovators. But they’re also bringing out Traxman, another Chicago footwork legend. His Da Mind of Traxman LP on Planet Mu last year was a shoe-in for year end lists, and a turning point in visibility for the sounds of chicago footwork. Also on the bill, Mixpak’s Dubbel Dutch, who knows a thing or two about makin motherfuckers dance at high tempos, and Lit City residents J-Cush and Durban. Back at 285 Kent – bring earplugs, it will get loud.

Egyptrixxx, Evan Michael, T’Angelo, Judge Wise at Cameo Gallery [12AM/$7]
Toronto’s Egyptrixxx is back in NYC, with his “celestial club music”. Pulling from techno, drone and even pop motifs, Egyptrixxx obliterates your expectations of what can be done with a 4×4 format. Expect an extremely danceable set full of unexpected textures, tension and a complete lack of trendy bullshit.

Christian Martin (Dirtybird) plus Chris Love, AB Logic, Chris Patrick + Joe Pompeo at Cielo [10PM/$15]
Christian Martin is one of the founders of Dirtybird, the label that has single handedly fomented a San Francisco funky tech house revival. Supported by the SOUP crew, who normally hold it down at Sullivan Room, this is a party for people serious about gettin their dance on.

BONOBO, Nickodemus, Wiseacre at Public Assembly [12AM/$10]
The demigod of downtempo, Bonobo, is playing 2 shows tonight in support of his new LP, The North Borders. The first, at Webster Hall, is totally sold out, but he has a late DJ set at Public Assembly with limited tickets available at the door. I’ve had the pleasure of catching Bonobo twice in the last year, and his DJ sets are energetic and danceable, infused with his uber-smooth jazz and trip hop sensibility, but still sounding totally current for a 2013 dancefloor.

Tonight there’s truly something for everyone. Our pick is Addison Groove at Cameo Gallery – this guy is always on the bleeding edge of bass music (and is now running a new label, LIT). As Headhunter he was my gateway to deep dubstep, and it’s incalculable how many people who got turned on to juke/footwork by his immortal tune Footcrab. Every time I see him play, he turns my brain inside out. With support from FaltyDL (whose new LP on Ninjatune is SO GOOD) and SciFi&Fantasy label head Max Pearl

If you like Breaks, then the only place to be tonight is House of Yes for VITAMIN B. They have finally booked Deekline, who is about as legendary as they come for a genre. Plus the residents Barney Iller, Tektite and Tim The Enchanter are all veteran badasses – this one is for serious dancers only (but they are opening up a second chillout room due to the huge expected turnout). Hit up ELECTRIC PUNANNY at the Paper Box tonight for a frenetic mix of dancehall, hip hop and all kinds of global bass – they’re celebrating the third installment of the mixtape series of the same name, and have OG producers Dubbel Dutch and Dre Skull.

VERBOTEN has tINI and Justin Martin at HIghline Ballroom tonight. There are a lot of Justins in house music, but none whose tunes are as funky and ubiquitous as his recent LP on Dirtybird, Ghettos and Gardens (and the two volumes of remixes it inspired). Expensive, but highline is a very nice venue and the crowd is gonna be mad hyped. Finally, if you’re looking for a weirder DIY vibe, hit up AstroNautico – they have  an interesting spectrum of house music tonight from guests Braille (Praveen from Sepalcure) and some live hardware from Octa Octo. Plus the massive Tsunami Bass soundsystem (the one that powers Reconstrvct) and some very talented residents, all for just $8 with RSVP. And the space is really one of a kind (it’s a rave parking garage – no, really)

SATURDAY also has great options – the most interesting of which is definitely IDLE, put together by the Reconstrvct crew and BigUP magazine. It’s an art show featuring the work of Ashes57 (who did so much of the dope art for Outlook Festival) as well as a lineup of exceptionally talented experimental electronic music. No tickets at the door tho, so be sure to get one in advance if you want to go (secret BK location will also be annouced only to ticketholders day of). Over at Le Bain, our boys DKDS are headlining Night People – expect some serious dancefloor-oriented techno and house. Also, you may know two out of the three residents (Lloydski and Eli) from Bushwick’s finest dance party, Tiki Disco. Trust us when we say you’ll be in good hands.  And for all you 90s ravers, DnB legend Photek is in the Webster Hall basement on saturday, while NinjaTune  veteran DJ Vadim will be at Brooklyn Bowl for just eight bucks.

Also don’t neglect to check out all the new additions for February and March!  We’ll be blessed to enjoy two more Reconstrvcts, the return of Bicep, Kyle Hall,  Egyptrixx, Chrissy Murderbot, an Osgut Ton showcase at Output, a Dirtybird showcase at SRB, Turrbotax with Gerry Read and SO MUCH MORE.
