YOU GUYS It’s almost time for Outlook Festival and I’m starting to freak out a little bit. If you don’t know already, Outlook is the world’s greatest celebration of sound system music and culture, and it’s set in an abandoned fort on the stunning Adriatic coast in Croatia. It’s been 2 years since we were last there and we can not WAIT to get back. If reconstrvct is our local church, then Outlook is Mecca. And the Vatican. And Jerusalem. It’s a pilgrimage to the promised land.
I could go on, but this highlights video from last year does a much better job of transmitting all the vibes in 6 minutes than I could in a lifetime (especially if you watch it in HD 😎).
In the coming weeks we’ll be posting what we are most looking forward to, as well as some handy info for Americans who are trying to reach this summer. If that’s you, then it’s not too late! Tickets have not yet sold out (but they will) and flights are still pretty reasonable (but won’t be for much longer). Hit me up if you have any logistical questions.
Our homies at MeanRed know that we’re big fans of Oneman over here at Wompblog, and have graciously bequeathed us two tickets for his show tomorrow night at the Panther Room. We’re giving them away to a lucky reader – could it be YOU!?
To win, just sign up for the WompList below with your email (if you’re already a member, just email us). It’s our friday email listing of the NYC bass music events, with top picks for the weekend and everything announced for the next few months. It’s also the only way to get in on exclusive ticket giveaways (like this one), reduced lists and other cool perks. We’ll pick a winner at 5PM on Wednesday and announce it shortly thereafter.
Once you’re on the WompList, you can double your chances of winning by tweeting about the contest (more on that below).
Everyone who signs up for the WompList before Wednesday, May 7th, 5PM EST will be entered to win 2 tickets to the show (your name will be on the list at the door with a +1, so find a date).
If you’d like to get two chances instead of one to win, tweet something like this:
I’m gonna win tickets to @djoneman and @jeromeLOL cuz the #womplist hooks it up » bit.ly/djonelol
Edit as you see fit, just make sure to include the hashtags #womplist, the usernames @djoneman and @jeromeLOL, and the bit.ly link to this page. Everyone who tweets something like that will get a second entry in the drawing for the tickets.

Thriftworks (SF), Sinjin Hawke, special guest, P. Morris, Subset, M!NT at SRB Brooklyn [10PM/15-20$]
We’re giving away 2 tickets to this show! Enter HERE before 6PM!
Thriftworks is one of the most unique voices in US bass music. In trying to describe his music, I’ve made up the following genres: bog-tech, skeksi club, avant druid, dagobah wave, insectno, dreamtime bass. Just listen to this live set and you’ll get what I’m trying to say. This is intensely organic music, made by someone who clearly spends a lot of time in nature.
While Thriftworks came up as a producer in the Bay Area glitch-hop scene, his music bears only the vaguest resemblance to his peers – Eskmo is the closest, but there’s still a vast gulf between them. His beats are definitely wonky, glitchy and backed up by some very rubbery bass. But there’s an definitively mystical quality to his work. And not in that obvious, fractal-loving, post-psytrance way that so many glitch-hop artists have adopted after enough time on hallucinogens. Imagine if Yoda had an MPC and a field recorder, and you’re getting close. Never one to fuck with a label, Thrifworks has self-released 6 full albums of amazing music since 2010, and you can hear it all at his bandcamp.
Co-headlining is Sinjin Hawke, who is about as different from Thriftworks as two white male producers can get. If Thriftworks is the mystic in the woods, worshipping plant gods and decomposition, Sinjin is the mystic of the city, exalting the entire pantheon of club styles and everything neon and steel and artificial. His latest mix for i-D mag makes that clear. From his collaborations with MikeQ that pretty much out-HudMo HudMo, to his 3d mapped visuals with Zora Jones, to his penchant for footwork and jersey club, this is the entire urban experience put in a space-blender and whipped to a fine froth.
Supporting you’ve got Subset, one of NYC’s hardest working bass music DJs. His BASSment Saturdays party skews towards Brostep in terms of headliners, but dude plays an phenomenal variety of subgenres in his sets, and with an extremely keen ear for moving the crowd (srsly guys, click that link). Also supporting is P.Morris, (formerly MORRI$), the Philly Night SLugs and Fade to Mind affiliate who recently rebooted his identity with the his first full length album, Debut. It’s an intensely hazy, emotional, and refreshingly non-aggro take on the 2013’s RnBass sounds. Hear the whole thing in a continuous mix here.

Bankstaz Paradise is some of the freshest shit I’ve heard in a minute. Spanish producer Strand delivers 6 tracks full of Afrobeat horns and skronky beats reminiscent of Fulgeance. Oh, and an Om Unit remix. How can you not hit play? According to the description,
he had two ideas in mind: paying homage to G-funk and Gangsta Rap (drawing a parallel between the gangstaz and bankstaz of the current Spanish economic crisis) and working with a soul-afrobeat horn section which was conveniently named The Financial Horns.
Love G-funk and I love the way he’s updated it and tied it in with current events. You can preorder the wax over at Bandcamp, this is out Feb 17 on Lovemonk.
Levon Vincent, DJ QU, Dakini9, Terrence Parker, DJ Spider at Output [10PM/$20]
It’s not up for debate – Terrence Parker is one of the best DJs in the world. His remarkably active, editorial approach to mixing will make you wonder why all other DJs are so damn lazy. Joining him you’ve got Spider and Dakini9 from Plan B, one of Jersey’s best techno labels, as well as big name NY house guys Levon Vincent and DJ Qu.

Jessy Lanza (Hyperdub), The Drum at Glasslands [8-11:30PM/$10]

NIGHT PEOPLE: Riton (Ed Banger), Blu Jemz, Lloydski at Le Bain [10PM/FREE]
Riton is a French electro producer with tremendous versatility. His Can’t Stop The Clock mix shows off his original production, bootlegging a bunch of his favorite tracks (I LOVE his Jeremih remix, which has zero trap despite being entitled “trap house”) . But his most recent mix really took me by surprise, because it’s packed end-to-end with UK Bass; dark warehouse breaks from faves like Special Request, Tessela, Randomer and Etch. I’m guessing he’ll probably play less underground to the Le Bain crowd, but anything could happen.

Dub Champions Festival is almost over, with Adrian Sherwood and Pinch debuting their collaborative live set TONIGHT at Deep Space. If you’re in NYC you best be reaching. What, you have stuff to do tomorrow? Clearly, you haven’t listened to this:
DESCENT: Grenier, XI, Congi (US debut), Prism, Blysk at House of Yes [10PM/$20-25]
Biggest lineup yet from the Descent crew. This is the US debut of Congi, a dubstep producer from the UK, whose jazzy inflections and laid back vibes will delight anyone who enjoys Author or Phaeleh. Also headlining are future bass pioneer XI and Grenier / DJG – who also happen to be old friends, and will be doing a very special b2b. I’ve been in love with XI beats ever since I heard his scene-stealing remix of Sepalcure. And Grenier? Oh gosh. His set at reconstrvct earlier this year was one of the best I’ve ever seen; a brilliant, flawless, relentlessly energized all vinyl set of all styles of bass music. His free album, VOIDS III, is easily one of the best LPs of this year. Warming it up will be Descent founder and resident Blysk, and Boston’s dubstep virtuoso, Prism. Hit up our feature page on this event for set times and a 20% discount code on advance tickets!

Percussion Lab x Rudimentary Records: Boxcutter (Planet Mu ✈ Ireland), Enoe, Archie Pelago, Seafloor, Braille at Cameo Gallery [12AM/$7-10]
God bless Percussion Lab. In addition to hosting one of the best mix repositories on the internet, they’re always booking the most interesting producers. This time around it’s Planet Mu’s Boxcutter, comin all the way from Ireland. Boxcutter’s early production was a worthy descendent of Aphex or Squarepusher; glitchy – at times abrasive – IDM with undeniably soul. But his scope is vast, everything from broken 2-step to Bonobo-esque funk. Opening is our favorite cello-sax-dj trio, Archie Pelago (debuting their ableton PUSH live set) and the Perclab regulars.

RECONSTRVCT 2ND ANNI: Youngsta, V.I.V.E.K., Amit, Surprise Guest, Kahn and Neek, Joe Nice, True Nature at the 1896 [10PM/$25-60]
I don’t think there’s ever been a bigger dubstep lineup in NYC. Reconstrvct has become an NYC institution in the last 2 years, raising the bar to a level no other bass music events can touch (tho certainly it has inspired many to try, and that’s a good thing). More than the events, Reconstrvct has built a community who are dedicated and inspired by this music. Scores of folks are bussing and flying in to NYC for this show because there’s just nothing else in the US like this. Infinite props to Luke, Scott and Joe for creating a night that truly transcends partying and has become a place as holy as anything can be in this day and age.
Oy, this lineup. Lets start with Youngsta – one of the most renounced dubstep djs, his rinse.fm show has a fanatical following, winning him Best Dj in the dubstepforum awards two years in a row now. His energetic presence and peerless mixing are unmistakable. V.I.V.E.K. Is a true giant of the scene – he crushed it at the first anniversary. He’s made too many huge tunes to even name but both sides of his latest single (and the first on his new label, System Music) Asteroids/Over My Head has long since passed anthem status. When that drops on Saturday, I’ll put money on at least 2 wheel ups.
Kahn and Neek are two of the illest producers in grime – Backchat is honestly one of the sickest tunes I’ve heard in the last year (and Chevy aint far behind). Apparently they’re getting a TWO HOUR set, so prepare to get deep. Now Amit’s a newer name to me but his tune Acid Trip has also become a reconstrvct anthem. Oh AND there’s a special surprise guest – last year that turned out to be PINCH. This year? I have a guess. Add to that the two greatest residents ever (True Nature warming it up and Joe Nice finishing it out) and a truly massive private warehouse venue, and you’ve got yrself a proper 2 year anniversary for our favorite party.

Taste Tester and Hydrabadd are beat makers from Atlanta, currently on tour (check out the sweet promo mix). They’ve collaborated on a bunch of tracks, taking rnb samples and neon arpeggios and mashing them with cloud rap beats, Jersey Club, and juke. Listen to this remix they did and tell me you aren’t in love with whatever the fuck this music is. Joining them are No Eyes, with some more abstract/ambient beats, organizers The Orator and Kuato who will bring a diverse spread of bass, and personal favorite Knomad (founder of OnTheSly). All this tasty bass music, on a funktion-1 system for $5? You betcha.

Secret Night Slugs headliner is just the cherry on top (hint – it’s probably the one who lives in NYC). Ferocious jersey club/ghettotech from DJ Uniique should be a treat; Doctor Jeep is one of our favorite bass music dj/producers (check his recent mixpak radio session), and he’s going b2b with another longtime fav, Obey City. Plus sets from the founders – who clearly know Brooklyn bass music to have put together such a great lineup. Could this be the bass music party we’ve been waiting for?

Dope dope dope dope fucking beats from Lewis James, an Irish producer based in Amsterdam. His KRAKATOA EP came out last week on Original Cultures, and here’s a mix celebrating it. Largely his productions, as well as tracks by Submerse, Ital Tek, Clicks and Whistles, EAN and Mr. Carmack to tie it all together – damn fine company. While the EP tracks are great, I think the ordering does them a disservice – the first two (Million Dollar Lady and Mr. Cannibal BBQ) don’t grab me nearly as much as the last three. But in the mix, they all really shine – you can really feel the energy and focus Lew put in to these tracks seeping out.
Like contemporaries Eprom, Desto, and Doshy, Lewis James has been producing crunked-out mutant 808 tracks since way before the whole trap thing blew up. But such base(d) comparisons sell short what Lewis James does in the studio. This is some neon hyphy bitcrushed gangster shit. His 2012 Heavy Romance EP (which featured the best album art of the year) was full of fantastic ideas and great moments; the slap bass on Everything, the sample chopping over gritty bass on Only Me. But the new EP shows a lot of growth. It all just sounds more urgent, more self-assured – cleaner, tighter and far more deadly for the dancefloor.

Easy Star Allstars, John Brown’s Body at Brooklyn Bowl [8PM/$15]
The Easy Star Allstars have made a name for themselves doing next-level dub covers of classic albums. They’ve remade Dark Side of The Moon, Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band, and Radiohead’s OK Computer – all pretty stoney albums to begin with – to be even more irie than the originals. Which is no small feat. But the real accomplishment here is that these don’t sound like covers at all; more like the same album from an alternate dimension. The Allstars are comprised of top-notch session players and produced by the deft hand of Ticklah, aka Victor Axelrod (who is also a founding member of The Dap-Kings and Antibalas).

While Amon Tobin has been turning heads of the last 2 years with his phenomenal ISAM a/v show, his DJ sets are pretty mind-blowing in their own right, as his 2003 live album will attest. His dynamic sets are furious mix of classics from his extensive discography, deep cuts of weirdo drum-n-bass, and smattering of contemporary heavyness. I’ve seen him several times and can say with confidence that his sets never disappoint.

COOL OUT: DJ Ripley (all-vinyl dancehall set), Max Pearl, Regent Street, Oliver Rivard at Bushwick Kitchen [11PM/FREE]
A rocksteady, ska and dubwise party, featuring an all-vinyl set from DJ Ripley. Can’t say enough good things about Ripley. Not only is she an absurdly talented DJ (check the mixes. seriously.) and a freshly minted member of Dutty Artz, she’s also a righteous legal scholar, educator and activist. Her twitter and blog are must-reads if you ever think about the intersections of gender, race and class as they pertain to the dancefloor. And if you don’t, WAKE THE FUCK UP! Shit matters.

TOP PICK LIT CITY RAVE: DJ Deeon, Traxman, Dubbel Dutch, J-Cush, Durban at The Rink [10PM/$12]
Lit City is back in NYC for the first time since New Years, and boy are they going hard. First off, it’s the NYC debut of DJ Deeon, who has been pushing Chicago’s ghetto house sounds since ‘94 – he’s one of the true originators and innovators. But they’re also bringing out Traxman, another Chicago footwork legend. His Da Mind of Traxman LP on Planet Mu last year was a shoe-in for year end lists, and a turning point in visibility for the sounds of chicago footwork. Also on the bill, Mixpak’s Dubbel Dutch, who knows a thing or two about makin motherfuckers dance at high tempos, and Lit City residents J-Cush and Durban. Back at 285 Kent – bring earplugs, it will get loud.

Egyptrixxx, Evan Michael, T’Angelo, Judge Wise at Cameo Gallery [12AM/$7]
Toronto’s Egyptrixxx is back in NYC, with his “celestial club music”. Pulling from techno, drone and even pop motifs, Egyptrixxx obliterates your expectations of what can be done with a 4×4 format. Expect an extremely danceable set full of unexpected textures, tension and a complete lack of trendy bullshit.

Christian Martin (Dirtybird) plus Chris Love, AB Logic, Chris Patrick + Joe Pompeo at Cielo [10PM/$15]
Christian Martin is one of the founders of Dirtybird, the label that has single handedly fomented a San Francisco funky tech house revival. Supported by the SOUP crew, who normally hold it down at Sullivan Room, this is a party for people serious about gettin their dance on.

BONOBO, Nickodemus, Wiseacre at Public Assembly [12AM/$10]
The demigod of downtempo, Bonobo, is playing 2 shows tonight in support of his new LP, The North Borders. The first, at Webster Hall, is totally sold out, but he has a late DJ set at Public Assembly with limited tickets available at the door. I’ve had the pleasure of catching Bonobo twice in the last year, and his DJ sets are energetic and danceable, infused with his uber-smooth jazz and trip hop sensibility, but still sounding totally current for a 2013 dancefloor.

A recent live set from the Archie Pelago, recorded live at Glasslands for Discovery Party on March 9. One of the reasons I love these dudes so much is their versatility. You could say that’s by design; the trio is a DJ (Dan Hirshorn) and two live musicians (Zach Koeber on Saxaphone and Greg Heffernan on Cello) which gives them a lot of range, stylistically.
But it’s also by choice. A week before this set was recorded, I saw them at Freecandy where their set was largely 160 bpm stuff – juke, jungle and the like. That feel was perfect for the Astronautico party, which leans towards the experimental edges of bass music. Then they turn around and play an almost all-house set (with a fucking awesome techno curveball from Randomer towards the end) for Discovery. Judging by how the whole crowd was dancing, it was the right choice. Enjoy.

Local badman Dunes was nice enough to send this mix our way, and I’ve been hideously delinquent in posting it. But we’re getting It’s the fifth installment in Bass Squad’s Bassment Noise series. Oscillating between mellower, poolside-appropriate house and more club-ready tunes, this is one of those mixes that could work equally well as a warm up or a cool-down.
It’s worth noting that the track selection pulls heavily from underground NYC producers in and around the Broke City collective – names you’ve probably seen but might still be sleeping on. Sleepyhead, Cream Dream, Figgy, Dunes, Obey City – there’s a tremendous amount of talent bubbling up here. It would behoove you to pay attention.

I’m kinda blown away by this live performance by iamyank (via amb). He’s using the forthcoming ipad app, Beatsurfing, which is unique in that it’s designed to let you draw your own midi instruments. iamyank posted the audio from this a few weeks back on soundcloud, and it sounded great, but seeing it happen in front of yr eyes is a whole ‘nother thing.
Lest you think it’s all tricknology (the ipad app he’s using can trigger 8 sounds from one hit), keep in mind that the whole idea behind beatsurfing is that you lay out your own interface, so that you can naturally trigger sounds with a series of smooth motions (aka ‘surfing’). Anyway, to appease the purists, here’s a vid of him rockin out on a traditional mpc.
When a mix starts out with a T. S. Eliot quote, you know it has somewhat loftier aspirations than your typical hour of beatmatched tunes. Masterfully put together by Soulmind, these 45 minutes showcase the more introverted, transcendent side of bass music. Burial or Sepalcure fans, take note.
The nature imagery in the title is apt; the vibe here is pointedly non-urban. Whereas early dubstep relied on dread and weight, this breed of future bass is permeated by a kind of lightness and hope. There’s no drops (unless you count the dew on the peaceful morning this mix conjures in your mind). These are headphone jams for your mind-forest.
A lot of DJs go for the jugular; Soulmind goes for the pineal gland. If you like this, grab some more of his tasty mixes on Soundcloud.

The insane duo from Toronto has done it again – this 20 minute mix showcases a newer, and very much electro, sound for them. They still bring some roughneck bass towards the end, but more than half these tracks have some ravey vocals – normally that’s a dealbreaker for me, but they pull it off.

You’re gonna be hearing these bangers all year, may as well get to know them now. Superbad, in particular, makes me really, really happy – fuckin great to hear what Flux Pavillion can do with live drums and real guitars. These guys are puttin the fun(k) back in dubstep.

Straight electro fire. I don’t know much about Revolvr except that he sent me a track on soundcloud and got an instant follow. And ever since then, it’s one burner after another from this dude. This mix is everything I love about electro – chunky synth lines, big fat fucking kicks, vocals that know their place in the mix and aren’t cheesy, and maximum jackage.

Found this mix on the ENK blog, where Wompblog fav flatline also hangs his hat. A really nice garage history lesson. It’s not a genre I’m super familiar with, so maybe this will seem facile to the heads, I dunno, but I enjoyed it from start to finish. This mix does a great job of joining the dots between a sound many people think of as “90s”, but is responsible for a lot of what’s awesome about bass music these days .

A whole fuck ton of awesome spacey futurist beats from producers you’ve never heard of, most of whom come from the mean streets of Budapest. Brainfeeder fans, apply within. I had the opportunity to kick it in Budapest a few weeks this summer before Outlook, and since returning I’ve been consistently impressed by the quality output of the beat scene over there. Fine Cut Bodies, iamyank, and now headshotboys are a few of my favorite dj/producers from that city, and I can’t wait to go back.
